If I were to put a 340 head on my Farmall A, would I need a different head gasket?

Guys i know use the head gasket for the A. They are getting more HP because of bigger valves and higher compression.

If you have the head, and the original is off the tractor, putting an old head gasket, and some carbon paper on both sides of it to leave marks will tell the overlap, and possible miss of the gasket on the metal ring at the combustion chamber. This must seal to work. The 340 head might have too much chamber size to catch anything but a 340 gasket. There are also differences in the water passages in the heads due to the use of a thermo siphon on the A, and a water pump on the 340. The 340 head will probably have more chamber volume, (not certain) but that is reducing compression, not a good thing to do for good power. I hope this helps, JimN

The heads could be CCed to determine the volume difference. A more modern head (especially one from gasoline only compared to a distillate head would produce more power. JimN
