Buddy has a 1942 serial numbered M with the 1939 size oil filter. When did they start putting the smaller diameter filters on M's. I wonder if someone just bolted on an old style filter? Thnks for you insights. Dick Davis

There appears to be some confusion here. The early Ms used an oil filter that was much bigger, not to be confused with the later tall filter that was shared with the early H. The later Hs used the short filter, the later Ms still use the tall filter, but it is not as large in diameter as what was used on the early M.

Rusty - you are right I did open a can!

When I referred to 1939 size filter I meant the one about 6" in diameter as opposed to the later ones that where about 4" in diameter in both short and tall heights. Anyway sorry I asked. Dick

I have three 1942 H's... 101816 and 101821 have the tall filter (along with flat PTO housing, and no pressure radiator) while 122068 has the short filter, longer PTO housing and pressurized radiator...

I suppose that many changes took place in '42. But I've also seen plenty of later tractors with the tall filter...

My 47 M has the large filter. I think the H changed in 41 or 42. We have a 41 H with a tall and a 43 with a short. Not sure about the M though.
