My H, I used a diagram from robert melvilles albums...My 12v conversion. I can't turn the tractor off! So, I see that the diagram used the top #1 and 2 of the alternater. # 2 went to the batter peg on back of alternater. Then, #1 went to switch but on the same side of the switch that allowed the electicity to flow even if swith is off. If I place the #1 to the other side of the switch, will that matter? His diagram shows it the other way now but if the alternater is turning, it's putting carge to the coil so I can't turn it off...??? anyone seen that diagram and what am I doing wrong?

i tell ya 160Dan i hate those resistors i just buy new coils with the internal resistor that cleans up the side of the tractor. Just my way of doing things might not be yours :D have a good day OH! OH! I NEED TO THANK BOB M FOR THOSE DRAWINGS!!!! I have used just about all of them on my and on friends stuff

Link you must have either the diode or an light in line Iprefer the light because if the lite is lit it aint charging if the lite goes out then its probaly charging its just a quick glance and check I am not running down the diode one bit i just prefer the light

The alterntotrs required Lil No 1 side terminal excitation voltage needs to be fed from the downhill switched (IGN) side of the ignition switch, of course, the same terminal that wires to the ignition coils input or you can feed it direct from the coils input (NOT to distributor) terminal so its hot ONLY when the ignition is turned ON on..... . Then if the tractor keeps running even with the Ignition switch off cuz the alterntor is backfeeding the coil, simply place a 10 ohm current limiting resistor in series with the wire/circuit leading to the Lil No 1 side terminal. Some use a Diode there (must be wired - cathode side towards alternator) instead n that works fine cuz it serves as a one way electrical current check valve allowing current into the alternator to excite it BUT NOT out of the alternator to backfeed the coil..... ..

This is for a GM 10SI 3 wire alternator and they require neg ground remember.

The light...that"s what I didnt place in the system and the 10 ohm...I"d have never though of that....but the light will do the trick and stop it from continuing to run? Thanks!!!

160dan - Yeah adding the lamp in will solve your problem.

But be sure to use one rated around 200 ma or so (like an #168 intrument panel/side marker bulb) as the lamp current draw is somewhat critical. Too small a lamp and the alternator won't charge; to large and the engine to continue to run with the ign switch off.
