My first time at replacing a distributor and beginers luck didn't show. I aligned the mark on the pulley with the pointer, installed the distributor with the points open and rotor on #1 cylinder. Pulled the switch, pushed the starter lever and after three rounds got a dandy backfire so I rechecked alignment, unlike the old one, everything was the same. Are there 2 marks on the pulley, one for TDC and another for X degrees BTDC?

Pulley marks are at TDC compression, or TDC exhaust. Thus the explosion. Use your thumb in the #1 spark plug hole while turning the engine in the correct direction to find compression, then turn to the mark. Common issue, JimN

Never been up close on an MD so I don't really know how hard it is to get to the spark plugs, but if you pull the #1 plug and put your thumb over the hole while bringing the timing mark up on the front pulley, you should be able to feel/hear air whooshing out on one revolution, and nothing on the other revolution.

The one where the air is whooshing out is the compression stroke, and the one you should time your distributor to.

It sounds like you timed it to TDC exhaust stroke. That pointer on the crankshaft pulley comes around twice for every time a cylinder fires. To check move all the distributer wires two positions and try starting it again. Chuck

The MD distributor runs counter clockwise which is opposite of the regular M"s which run clockwise. Also, number one cylinder is by the radiator, four is by the fuel tank.

You do have your wires hooked up for counterclockwise, don't you?

Yes, 1342 starting with cylinder closest to fuel tank. #1 on distributor is at 4 o'clock position if you are looking down from the right side frame rail. Missing something pretty basic like that I'm sure.

Thanks, got misguided somewhere, will make changes when I get home. You'd think that switching from working on orange paint to red wouldn't make that much difference.

Well, at least you got the changein frring order right! We had quite a discussion over on Tractor Talk last week with an orange B wired up for a red firing order.
