Starting to finish up a Farmall "C" with the wiring. I know from the factory they were positive ground. What do most people do when restoring them to actually be a working tractor? Make them the original positive ground or convert them to negative ground????? Are the wires attached to the terminals on the amp gauge switched when a tractor is positive ground verse negative ground?? Thank you for your responses. andy

They were actually a "working tractor" when new n worked fine at Pos ground for 50 years so I dont see any reason to change any of that myself..... .... Exceptions are for Neg ground alternators but thats sure not original of course and any decent C ought to start n run fine at 6 volts anyway PLUS you will still be able to buy the more original and CORRECT parts (like say a Voltage Regulator etc) if you keep her at the original configuration. If you do change polarity and its a coil/distributor ignition instead of a magneto, in addition to ammeter lead swap (and re polarize the genny) the coil leads need swapped also.

If you have a generator in place, NOT an alternator, i.e., you're still 6 volt, there's no advantage to be gained by switching things to neg ground. Pos will work just fine.

If you were to change it, then, yes, you'd have to swap terminals on the ammeter. Your generator will polarize to charge either way.

Normally if the tractor is converted to 12 volt, then you would use negative ground, 6 volt system stays positive ground. Yes, if you switch over to negative ground the wires on the amp gauge need to be switched.
