Farmall A Final Drive Level Check Plug??

I just did a service on my 1944 Farmall A's tranny. I dropped the rear axle housing pans and got new gaskets and reinstalled. I found parts of bugs in the bottom of the pans and thought that was odd. There was no oil in the pans either. When I refilled the pans, through the big fill plug hole, oil started coming out of a hole I did not know was there. It is threaded and I assume it is a level check plug. The fill plug hole is forward of the axle and this smaller hole is rearward of the axle. There was no plug in either side (just the fill hole plug), which explains the bugs. I assumed the previous owner did not refill when he serviced. I tried a 1/4" NPT plug, but it is not the right size. Can someone tell me what size plugs goes back in there?

betha thats what it is my 40A has one of "bilnd holes" broken out like maybe someone used a too long bolt in the past what i did was use a lot of teflon tape and some pipe dope on the draw bar bolt no leaks so far

thats not a weep hole there is a locating dowell in that hole. The transmission lube does not get over there but lube from the final drive could.

Larry,
The final drives have their own fill plugs and only one in each.

Look under your tractor on the inside of the final drives in the location where your drawbar and other implements have attaching points and you will see a plug in between the forward most threaded hole and the next after it. Remove the plug and fill till it runs out. Only other thing I have seen is where someone over torqued one of the implement bolts to where the casting in the rear of the threaded hole broke out and essentially made another fill hole. I dont think there are any 1/4" holes anywhere back there.

Can't think of another plug other than the 1" pipe plug that is the fill hole.

Is the drawbar on the tractor? If not, I suppose it could be one of the holes for mounting the drawbar, but I thought those were blind holes.

If it is one of the holes for mounting the drawbar, it'll take either a 1/2" NC or a 5/8" NF, depending which hole it is.

Okay, I've been out fora look. the 5/8" hole, which would be at the very back isn't an issue. It goes all the way thropugh the casting to take anut washer and bolt to carry the weight of the drawbr.

Ahead of that, though, is the 1/2" hole that takes just a bolt that holds the angle for the front of the drawbar. It's located just behind the cap over the bearing on the bull gear, at about the same level as your fill plug. Like I said earlier, I thought this was a blind hole with a bottom, but it's possible, where it is above the level of the pan that it's threaded all the way through or, as was suggested above, somebody wound a bolt in there and poked it through. Poke a broomstraw or something in there and see how far it goes in.

Is this happening on both sides? It might explain why they were dry.

The bolt that goes in there if you have a drawbar is 1-1/2" long. If you're not gonna mount a drawbar, I'd plug the hole with one that's shorter, say 1".

Scotty: The two holes closest the axle(one each side of axle) on all these final drives have a very thin bottom. Probably less than 1/4" thick. It is very easy to thread in too long bolt and break the bottom out of the hole. When Larry had the pans off, he could have seen this as a break in the casting. Usually they break enough so 5/8 has an 1-1/2" diameter on the inside wall. Doesn't really weaken the final drive, my 130 has been that way since 1961. You do have to keep a bolt in that hole so it won't leak either way.

I make a practice of keeping well lubricated bolts in all those holes whether I'm using them or not. It keeps the threads clean should you ever wish to use them.

Yep! I tend to keep bolts or those good old factory original type #1 corks in the various threaded holes on the final drives and the pads for mounting implements.

I recall with a little embarassment wonderin' just what I had run into when I was takin' the wire wheel to the torque tube on my SuperC, and came across those 50-year-old corks. First thought was mud daubers, but the holes seemed awful big around for them, and I couldn't imagine that they'd got all of 'em. There's a lot of wondrous things to be learned in a parts catalog!

Well, that would likely explain how the bugs got in there, too. In my neighborhood, though, the mud daubers woulda had them holes filled and sealed tight!
