I was checking over the F-20 I just got for Easter and I see 2 oil caps on the top of valve cover. There is instruction on the side decal to "oil valve levers daily". Is this where you oil and is one supposed to do it daily?
Thanks

A side comment on the three oil-level taps:
The original idea was to drain down some of the oil that had been diluted by kerosene or distillate that had condensed in the cylinders. You were supposed to drain to the middle drain cock after every 10 hours of operation. The bottom drain cock is for the minimum level. With gasoline, this procedure is not necessary.

well if i remember correctly there are 3 oil check levels on oil pan!!! from oiling valve levers every day oil pan would overfill !!! if tractor didnt burn oil!! drain oil down to middle,or large petcock!! correct level!! if oil dosent run out of bottom petcock, fill untill it runs out of middle petcock!! keep valve levers oiled as instructions say!! important dan carey you can run a oil line to valves if u r interested in doing it ask me and i will tell u howi did it!!

Use the same oil as you do in the crankcase. You need to put oil in those cups to lubricate the rocker arms. F-20's don't have a oil line to feed oil to the rockers, so you need to oil them in the cups daily. There are small trays on top the rocker arms with felt strips that will lube the rocker arms when you pour the oil in the cups.

Good point about the primers. They are much taller and have a "head" screwed onto small
pipes. The lids slide sideways, while the
oil cups have flip-up lids. The primers were apparently intended to assist in starting in winter, according to the operator's manual. I believe they could also be used if the engine had been stopped on kerosene or distillate and allowed to cool off. These engines were extremely difficult or impossible to start on the heavy fuels after cooling off. A few squirts of gasoline in the primers would probably give a mixture that would start the engine. The correct way to stop, of course, was to shut off the kerosene/distillate and let the engine stop after the carb emptied, OR, shut off kerosene/distillate, turn on gas and stop after the engine had time to burn up the heavy fuel in the carb. Pain in the neck. I tried it once on my father's 10-20 and said I'd never use kerosene again.

There are also fuel priming caps there so make sure you use the right ones. The fuel priming caps are taller than the oil trough caps.

Its been a long time, but I thought those caps were for priming the engine with gasoline. You might remove the valve cover and check it out. At my age, CRS is a major factor. ken

The operator"s manual says, "One-sixth of oil can as furnished with tractor." Doesn"t say how big the can is, but you can imagine a typical oil can from the 30s. Total capacity might be a pint? There are two troughs under the rocker cover, each with two felts that absorb the oil poured in, then let it drip slowly over the rocker shafts and down to the valves. Used on all tractors with this type engine until 1939 model change. Pretty primitive, but it worked if the driver just put some oil in there every day.
Use same oil as engine, because it will eventually drip down into crankcase. When I used these tractors, I oiled generously twice a day. Takes just a few seconds.

I think it is a pint oil can also. The can has straight sides that taper in at the very top and the spout goes straight up in the air from the screw on cap. I see them once in a while at antique shops and swap meets and there seems to be some show up on ebay. Some are embossed with Mc Cormick Deering on them and some are embossed with a dealer name.

There are felt peices in a trough just below those caps, they "meter" the oil going to the rocker arms and levers. When they say daily, that means just when you are going to run it. I oil mine the night before if it has been sitting a while and then again in the morning of running. It gives it a chance to get pre lubed up some. When the engine gets hot the oil flows much faster through the felt so I have been known to oil it twice a day! It won"t hurt it.
