On the 484 I notices some bubbles around the injector from fuel that leaked out of the line when I cracked it open to see if there was fuel there. I have fuel at all 3 injectors but I poured fuel around the injectors and have bubbles when I crank it over. Thats probably why it wont start. How do I seal up the injectors?

Mike, It's been a few years since I've had injectors out of a German diesel, but I remember having the same issue. The seat in the injector bore needs to be perfectly clean. Seems like I made a little cleaning tool by finding a piece of pipe that was just as big around as the injector. I then placed a 2"x2" square of brillow pad down the injector bore, stuck the pipe over it, and twisted the pipe around. Blow out with compressed air when done. Can't remember for sure if there was a sealing washer, think there might have been.

Michael, it has been 20 years since I had an injector out of a D179 but I recall having to clean out the hole with a battery terminal brush and compressed air, then cranked engine with hole open to blow all the bits out of cylinder.
I believe there was a copper "O" ring on the nozzle. Looked on CIH parts and it shows:
717203R1 O-RING O-RING, injection nozzle sealing.
The time that I had the 2 injectors out, I didn't have replacement "O" rings so just cleaned up old ones and re-used then. Install injector, tighten finger tight then tighten each nut 1/4 turn at a time until tight. Must keep injector in alignment. Use soapy water to check for leaks. Re-tighten after engine has been up to operating temp. I looked in my I&T manual for 684, D239 but same setup as D179 and the instructions for reinstall is clean hole & torque nuts to 18 ft-lbs. They do caution to drain coolant incase the injector nozzle sleeve comes out and allows coolant into cylinder.

I got them as tight as I think I can without twisting off the 5/16 bolt that holds them in.

Did you use new copper gaskets on the ends where they seat in the head? Hoss

The germans go not use a copper gasket. They seal againest the brass nozzel sleeve. They do use a rubber oring on top part of the injector to keep dirt and water out from between the injector and sleeve.

I had no idea there was a copper gasket on them. I never seen a old copper ring and I dont think I got any with the rebuild kit. I also didnt see anything in the manual about them.
