I put the rebuild kit in the 484 and it wont start. I have fuel at the injectors and it just chugs white smoke while your cranking it over.

Also I put a oil pressure guage on it and while Im cranking it there is no oil pressure. I took the guage off and cranked it over and no oil came out. Is there maybe something wrong with the oil pump?

I took the oil pressure sensor off and put a T on it with the sensor and the gauge. I didnt prime the oil pump, I didnt think about it and this is my first engine rebuild. Ill try to dump some oil in where the sensor is. I just put in new pistons and sleves with all new bearings. The engine ran before. It had a spun bearing when I bought the tractor.

Use a pump type oilcan (several cans worth) to fill up the galleries.
A spun bearing can be an indication of low oil pressure, so be sure to check things well. JimN

Did you prime that oil pump in a clean container of engine oil before reinstalling it on the engine? Hal

JimB2, the injection pump and valve timing were never touched. Its was about 35 deg out today.

The white smoke smells like unburned fuel.

Thats what it is.Cold motor, not started but white smoke,I dont think thats a lot to worry about yet.Lots of diesels smoke white until they warm up. Not having oil pressure is a worse thing. It might just be it hasnt got prime. But it might be that its not turning fast enough to pump a lot of oil?I dont know about that, but I think I would try and get some oil in the pump like through where you hooked the gauge. If you didnt move the timing and have fuel to the injectors it should run.You might want to check the part number on your pistons and see if thats the same as the ones you took out.Another thing is did you set the valves right? If the valves arent closing that could be the trouble.

If it has a block heater plug it in for an hour or so. I assume you used engine lube on all the parts when you re-assembled. So there will be lubrication until oil pump starts. Also you said you installed an oil pressure guage, I would assume by removing the oil pressure sensor by the oil filter? I would remove the oil pressure sensor and fill the oil pump thru this oil.

Michael, white smoke is caused by injection pump out of time or insufficient compression to ignite the Diesel fuel. The compression will be down until the rings seat. Did you have the injection pump or timing gears removed? If the pump or gears were not removed then the timing should be good. How cold is it where the tractor is located? Maybe a short of ether but not to much. Do you have another tractor or 4x4 to pull start it?

It might also be a good idea to put a test light on your fuel injector plugs and make sure ur getting power to them. If not, then u have found your problem. About your oil pressure situation, I have a 1964 Massey Ferguson MF-50 with a continental Z134 in it. It doesnt build any oil pressure when cranking either, but as soon as it starts the needle comes to life. Don"t sweat it. Keep tinkering away andtrying different things, and eventually you are bound to get it right and start your tractor.

Your engine blowing white smoke is almost surely a sign that your head gasket is screwed. If you put a new on on and its still doing it, take your engine to a machine shop and get the head and cylinder gasket mating surfaces checked to make sure they aren't warped
