Oil in H Distributor

Hello All.

So a few days back I asked about what oil to put in the generator and starter oil cups, and thought that I needed some for the distributor as well.

Turns out I didnt need any at all... :(

I went to change out all the various parts of the ignition system (plugs, wires, cap rotor, points, condenser) and as soon as I pulled the breaker cover I knew I had a problem. Everything was covered in oil, which is probably part of why she wasnt running so well. (The fact that the plug wires, cap, and rotor were original to the tractor probably didnt help)

Im still new at this, but Im pretty sure that those breaker points are supposed to stay happy and dry, not covered in oil.

So how big of a deal is it to seal up whatever is leaking in this thing? Do I just use o-rings, or is there an actual oil seal or two I need to hunt down? Its a battery ignition distributor, not the one off of a mag, if that matters.
Thanks in advance!

~Bug

Thanks for the replies gents.

Its an H, although I do have an H and a M, but hopefully that one doesnt have the same problem.

Ill check the crankcase vent, and see what I have to do as far as an o-ring for the distributor.
I am a little leery of pulling that off of there, but I guess I have to do it sometime.
Thanks again!

If you have the IH battery ignition dist, there is an O ring on the dist shaft behind the gear. The shaft will have to come out to get to it. Most likely cause of the oil is over lubrication or incorrect lubrication. There is (or should be) a slotted head 1/8 pipe plug on the dist body. This plug is to be removed and a grease fitting put in its place, then apply 1 or 2 shots with a grease gun maybe once a year. Then remove the grease fitting and replace the plug to prevent over lubrication.

CIH P/N 252739R1 O ring 1/2 x 11/16 x 3/32
Hope this helps.

If its an H or an M(YOU DIDN'T MENTION),CHECK YOUR CRANKCASE VENT.It comes out of the side cover behind the distributor. If you take this cover off, you'll find a little plate with 2 screws with a slot.If you take that off, there is a filter in there, similar to a furnace filter. It could be plugged after all these years, making the pressure build and forcing oil out into your dist.

Check the tube as well. The filter is available for it.

Hope this was helpful.

my h had same problem several years ago, i just throughly cleaned distributor w/brake cleaner and compressed air, then cleaned out old grease from distributor drive housing (had turned solid & oil in dist was seperated grease, was clear, not engine oil) repacked housing and life was good.
there is a o'ring, current ih part no 272344 that can be replaced, but you still need to service grease in drive housing. there is also a seal in the adapter housing part no 3983231R91 that will keep engine oil from entering drive housing
