I asked a question a while back about how I can wire my '44 H without the VR and the generator in the loop, just so I can get it running. Here is what Bob M said:

Bob M said: To wire the ignition, simply run a wire from the ammeter terminal that's NOT connected to the batterr. Run this wire to either terminal on the ignition switch. Run a 2nd wire from the other ign switch terminal to the coil primary terminal that's NOT connected to the distributor. That's it! As long as you've got a charged battery the tractor can now be started and run.

I looked at his diagram for the 6v system with a cutout relay and distributor. But it's confusing me.
third party image

I'll tell you how I think I'm supposed to wire this, and you tell me if I'm right or wrong, and what to correct:

Positive battery cable to ground.
Negative battery cable directly to the starter.
A 10 gauge wire from the starter to the starter button.

A 10 gauge wire from the other terminal of the starter button to the ammeter.

A 10 guage wire from the ammeter to the pull on/push off switch.

A 14 gauge wire from the pull on/push off switch to the ignition coil.

A 14 gauge wire from the ignition coil to the distributer.

That doesn't seem right to me because I've seen battery cables run directly up to the starter button. But I don't really see that on the wiring diagram, which is why I'm confused.
Help?

Thanks so much Tom! I sent an e-mail, but here are the rough lengths:

38"

32"

14"

I'll go check for them this week. I hope they come with instructions.

Bobs diagrams can be confusing to some, but the yare generally easy to follow. You need 1 heavy gauge wire, 00 or 0, from the battery to the ground, then another from the battery to your big brass switch, then from the switch to the starter. Thats all, nothing more to get it to turn over. For starting, all you need is to run a wire from the battery to your coil, but if you prefer, you can wire in the switch by going from the battery to the push/pull switch, then to the coil. I didnt say polarity on purpose, since Ithought you were going with 12 volt at one point, and for that you need - ground, but to get it running it doesnt matter.

No, I'm pretty sure it doesn't. I'll double check. But even still, eventually I'm going to rewire again. I only need this initial wiring to get it running. Eventually I'll need to add in the generator, the VR, and 3 lights through the switch. But when I do that, I want to purchase a cotton braided wiring harness and do it nice.
[quote:369ab28124="gene bender"]It doesent show the starter sw with the big button and does your H have the original mag. Just how original do you want your H to be when done?

I'm eventually buying a rebuilt mag from Magman. Currently it has a distributor. As far as original, I'm shooting for as original as I can get it, within reason.

Doesent your owners manual from I-H have the wiring diagram in the book? That diagram you posted is not correct for your tractor. It doesent show the starter sw with the big button and does your H have the original mag. Just how original do you want your H to be when done?

Something I just thought about... there is a Welding store, I'm assuming a supply store of sorts for professional welders. I pass it on my way to work. Would they carry 0 gauge cable for cheap? Would they call it 0 gauge cable?

Dont Know. Go ask.

I have some around here. It is expensive if you have to buy it. If you will get me the measurements and pay for the postage, I will send it to you.

hmmmm, not that I can think of. I'm sure there is someplace that welds, but that has cable I can take? I doubt it.

Janicholson said: A 10 ga wire goes to the amp meter.[/quote:cf68df70c0]

To clarify: You mean a 10 ga wire piggy backs on the outgoing (from switch to starter) terminal over to the ammeter?

[quote:cf68df70c0="Janicholson"](I would put a 30 amp fuse link in this wire, it is safety first for me).

A 30 amp fuse link? Can you explain that more?
Also, I'm going to have to get new battery cables, as my negative cable isn't long enough to make it to the big honkin starter switch, and I don't have one at all to run from the big honkin switch to the starter itself. So, a couple questions:

1) Can I use my exsisting ground cable? I don't know what gauge it is, but it reaches the new grounding point just fine.
2) What is the route that the cable from the switch to the starter took? I'd guess there were several options, but what was most common, or what looks the "cleanest"?
3) Since I have to buy new cables, what is a good and cheap source? Any auto parts store? Should I ask for anything specific, or just 0 gauge battery cable? What should I expect to pay?

Thanks!

A fuse link is a safety device (fuse that can blow preventing wiring fires). It can be wired into the system in series with the 10ga wire going from the Big starter switch (side attached to battery - not the side going to the starter motor.

The fuse link is available at NAPA etc. It usually comes with some form of connector on each end. Purchase connectors that match when buying one. THey can be out in the open, (best) allowing it to be serviced when needed. All modern electrical systems have fuse links to prevent (most) fires. A welding supply house (especially one that repairs welders) will have cables 0ga that can be cut and soldered into the terminal ends to connect it to the Honkin SW. Routing is cable ties (or metal clips with rubber grommets in them) to solid structures, behind the battery box.
Do not use the battery terminals that are clamped or bolted to the end of the cable. Solder on type are best. Good luck, I had to go sledding with my 15 year old for a couple of hours (Toboggan and Ski sleds) JimN

If that is all you want to acomplish at the moment, run a jumper wire from the negative side of the battery to the negative side of the coil...then wind it up.

No!!!
Your H has probably got a remote starter switch (not mounted on the starter.(Common reality)
The diagram is wrong for your tractor.
The negative Big 0ga battery cable goes to the switch mounted on your light bar, or lower (several positions were used) from this big honkin switch on the light bar (other terminal) a big heavy 0ga cable goes to the starter. A 10 ga wire goes to the amp meter (I would put a 30 amp fuse link in this wire, it is safety first for me).
This 10ga wire goes to the left side of the amp meter, when looking at it from the glass side of the meter. A 12ga wire then goes to the ignition switch, then from there to the coil. That will do it. Keep us informed. JimN

I would only like to add that the wire from the push/pull or on/off switch going to the coil should be attached to the "Neg" (-) terminal of the coil. Then run a short 12 gauge wire from the "Pos" (+) terminal of the coil to the post with a washer and nut on your distributor.
