Farmall 230 clunk type noise in one of the rear wheels. It sounds as if the wheel is slipping on the axle when it turns around but all the bolts are tight and the two key ways for the wheel and the mating u shaped connector are all tight and in place. The bolt from the wheel to the rime are also ok. I'm thinking it is inside the rear end and is being transmitted to the wheel from the axle. I can not detect any jerks as the axle turns but it does seem to clunk in the same position as the wheel goes around. sometimes it will clunk twice. It is more noticeable in a turn. I have never been inside of one of these and could use some help if anyone has some ideas.

Once again, Good old experience is worth it's weight in gold!
Thanks for all your advice and helps.
I started with the rim bolts. They tested out at 40 lbs torque. I tightened them to 95 ft lbs. The U connectors on the axle/wheel were at about 50 ft lbs. They also were re tightened to 95 ft. lbs. torque. The other wheel has very tight rim bolts. More than 95 lbs but I didn't determine how much. But the u connector was at about 50 lbs, just like the side with the clunk. It was also re tightened to 95 lbs. I them jacked up the frame holding the axle watching for any axle movement. I saw none. I blocked it up and turned the wheel by hand. Herd no noises. If this was proving the working inside the rear end, then I could detect nothing.(but the only clunk from before was with the weight of the tractor and a harrow on the wheels. With the harrow remove and on pavement instead of dirt,I could barely detect it before).
I removed the lift and took it for a test ride. No clunking.
I bought this tractor in disassembled in pieces in a bunch of boxes years ago. The transmission and rear end were the only things in tact. The engine needed lots of work but has been mostly fixed and is working fine now.It has other issues that still need to be dealt with, but I have no real info other than what I can glean at out Case Dealership here in town.
It seems that tightening these bolts could very well have corrected the clunk, But how much should they be tightened? What I really need is some good info on this tractor. It's a cool tractor and works very well.
Thanks again for your help
Rex

Angus: Tractor wheels either place are just about all I could exert 30 years ago on a 3' wrench handle. Probably somewhere in the order or 150 to 200 ft/lb. 30 years ago, I could pick the cast rear wheel cetter of a Farmall 560 off the ground and place it on the axle, with tractor jacked high enough for putting tire and rim afterwards.

That would be my bet. My A had a clunk that sounded in the rear end. It was the wheel bolts. Ron

Ron: You may be right, maybe we should have asked, "Do the rim bolts look tight or are they wrench tight." I had a truck driver like that once, wouldn't get the wrench out, because the bolts looked tight. I said, "You get that damn wrench out and you use it to decide if the wheel bolts are tight." We all should remember, looks are only skin deep.

Have you checked the rim on the wheel to see if the lugs are tight.

This may sound crazy but don't forget to check the front wheels too. One can be loose and the noise will travel and sound like it is coming from the rear end. BTDT. Also can be louder in a turn.
Good luck, I hope you don't need a tear down.

Angus: Jack the rear wheel under the axle housing. As you do this, watch for any monvement of the axle in relation to the axle housing. While you have it jacked, spin the wheel by hand, listening for the noise.

If all else fails, anchor the tractor so it can't fall off the jack, start it let the jacked wheel turn free. Get out mother natures listening device, get an old broom or shovel handle, put one end to your ear and the on variour places around rear end. You'll soon zero in exactly where the noise is coming from, within inches. Then report back.
