I have an H Farmall that has an F 10 Loader that I use for light duty work & snow removal. Last summer I went to move it and it developed a rattle or grinding noise in reverse. I shut it down. I drained the trans fluid & put new in (this had not been done in a Loooong time!) and drove it around a bit in low gear. The noise went away. It stayed gone until recently when I ran it in 3rd rather than low. It returned. Then it stopped. Before I could diagnose the problem (have someone listen to it), it came back really loud while it was in neutral & sitting still and the tractor died. With the clutch in you can start and run it but if you try release the clutch it dies. Any idea what went wrong???? Or.....does anyone need a good running H engine and a wide front??? Please help.

Jim N--Do the shifter forks have a bolt which holds them to the shifter rails? Can't remember how these are attached to the shifter rails. Maybe the fork broke on one gear, letting it get loose & mesh with another gear [in 2 gears at once] like you said. Thinking out loud---do the setscrews holding the fork on the rail have a safety wire wrapped around them? Can't remember--but he's probably going to have to pull the platform anyway.

I went to look on caseih.com search for parts. It appears to have a one piece design W/O setscrews. There is a stop plate, balls, and detent springs. JimN

I think there is a detent ball and spring missing from the reverse shift rail. This would allow the gear to slide into mesh when not intended, and or make the noise if it could not get into gear while moving. Take the shifter out of the tower. (two plugs cover the pivot pin, then it punches out pretty easily) look inside and you will likely find a set of three slots in the area near the bottom of the tower. One of these slots will be far out of alignment with the rest. Use a large screw driver to align them. (wiggling the rear tires back and forth may be needed with the clutch down) once out of gear it should be partially fixed, or at least diagnosed. The trans cover will need to come off to fix it by replacing the spring in the rail.
If the slots are aligned perfectly, the issue is a much more serious bearing failure. The diagnosis is similar, but much more disassembly of tranny gears is needed. Best of luck, and may it be the detent ball and spring. JimN

Thank you Jim! I will try to work on that this weekend. I hope you are right! If you are, it will be a much easier fix than I was thinking! I really like this old tractor! Nothing better for plowing snow....and is great on gas!

Jamie
