I have a pretty serious problem with a tractor of mine. I drained my oil last weekend and it had 5 GAL of coolant before the oil drained. I've read that the packings that seal the bottom of the cylinder is a weakness. I think this could be the problem. How big of a job am I looking at and how much money are we talking. Thanks for any help with this!

One thing you might check before tearing apart is on top of the cyl head,under the valve cover.I have had the soft plug rust thru.Just had to put in in plug & it was OK.

Before you take everything apart, remove the oil pan and look carefully where the coolant is coming from. If it is coming from around the outside of the bottom of the sleeves then it may be that only the o-rings need to be changed. If the coolant is coming from the inside of the sleeves, then you have holes in the sleeves from cavitation or problems with the head or head gasket. If the coolant is coming from the engine bearing, then the problem most likely is the oil cooler. This is not likely the cause unless you have not had the tractor running for a while since oil coolers will allow oil into the cooling system and the first indication is oil coming out of the radiator.
Based on the age of the tractor, if it has not been overhauled before, I would bet on the o-rings on the bottom of the sleeves as the problem. Cavitation on these engines is not as great a problem as it is on the 400 series engines. If it ran fine before you noticed this problem you may be able to get by with just replacing the o-rings. To do that you will need to remove the sleeve and piston as an assembly. If you remove the piston from the sleeve you will need to replace the rings or you will have oil consumption problems using the old rings.

The tractor vet is correct you will need to overhaul the motor. I would suggest having the block checked to be sure that the bottom is not eroded from the corrosion from the antifreeze. Hopefully the problem is in the sleeves. The will get pin holes in them. For people that do not have water filters on their tractors they need to keep their antifreeze changed and add an antifreeze conditioner such as DC4 to prevent the problem. You can monitor the water conditioner with a simple test kit that are available thru your big truck dealers on whether you need to add more conditioner.

That maybe the problem , BUT IF THE TRACTOR DID NOT HAVE A WATER FILTER ON IT then i would say that it is time for and overhaul. as ya have sleeve problems .Either way it will be a tear down and as for me if i am going to get that dirty then she is getting tore down all the way and be rebuilt all the way and then a water filter added.
