I have all the bearings & seals installed, just need to put down the felt washer and this darn $5 piece of packing. I can find no mention of how to put this piece on. Do I put the shaft in first then wrap the packing, or put in the packing first? does it overlap or go on in a spiral?

Sheesh, I got that little bitty piece in the package for 5 bucks
Guess I will make a trip to NAPA and see what they have.

Thanks everyone!

Randy

I usually use the one piece rope packing to rebuild. About 18 inches long. Cut it into sections long enough to wrap around the shaft 1 revolution or more and pack it in using the nut a section at a time with the shaft installed.

It only shows using one in the parts list, where do you see I need 3?

The listing for the diagram has an "x" in the number required column, that means as many as it takes, I would not use less than 3. It may still drip, my SH did so I then used a rope from NAPA as in the other post. It leaked too, but eventually stopped. I was told to put locktight on the packing nut threads, as the nut can work loose.

I'm not sure where I got the number 3. In my parts book it says 'as required'. The illustration shows three and that's what I got when I rebuilt my water pump. I do no recall if that is what the partsman said or what.

It has never leaked since, so three has certainly been adequate.

Remove the packing nut. Put the shaft in. Wrap the packing around the shaft. I think it takes 3 pieces. Then the nut. The felt washer goes between the housing and teh pulley. I&T has a cut away drawing that shows it (#17) and the packing (#19), page 46 fig. IH400. IH Service Manual has the same drawing (page 23), but the I&T is better.
