Hello, when i took off the manifold and rain water came out of one of the cylinders,so i pulled the head. Pretty easy. the cylinder has some rust, not to bad so a hone and new rings for all are going to be put in.Piston is still stuck, just got dark out. Will try this weekend to free and will have the head rebuilt while at it.Any ideas on who to rebuild.I am in NY. Thanks for all the advice!!! great web site..... ..johnny

When my super h was stuck, i just poured in a little diesel fuel into each cylinder and would come back every few days and grab ahold of the front pulley contected to the crankshaft and tried rocking it. After about a week and a half, it finally broke loose and turned over.

Rumor has it that a guy around here that works on a lot of antique tractors has a hydraulic hose adapted to spark plug threads and he hooks up another tractor and breaks them loose with hydraulic pressure. Lee

The landlord got a JD A with a stuck engine. He filled the cylinders with whatever & let it sit for a month. Remained stuck. He kind of threw in the towel & said to do whatever we wanted with it--would probably have to pull the head. Made a 3/4 inch plate to bolt to the holes on the flywheel & put an 8 foot pipe on the plate & put down pressure on it with a loader bucket--then up pressure--back & forth. Finally broke loose, & he never had to pull the head. Like the others said, give it a little time.

5 days is not enough. It can take weeks, sometimes months, of soaking before an engine will break free. You'd be very lucky if it broke free in less than a week.

Don't be afraid to really romp on that wheel. You can't break it unless you're superhuman strong. If you do break it, give flying a try because you just might be Superman :), but seriously if you do break something, something was VERY wrong and would've broken shortly after you got the tractor running anyway.

By the way, how much PB blaster? Did you just squirt some in with a spray can or did you get one of those gallon containers and fill the cylinders right up?

I have the same situation with an H. I don't know why , but I always manage to get the ones that are really stuck. I tried soaking with ATF, Brake Fluid, PB and even tranny fluid and nothing. I checked the muffler and found a crack on the top, so I pulled the oil plug. About 2 qts. of water ran out of the pan. It will have to be pulled apart I quess.

Unless you left it outside with nothing on the muffler, 1 1/2 years is nothing. Im rather surprised it locked up after that short amount of time. Rock the crap out of.

If its stuck that bad the head needs to come off anyway. I had one engine that was lightly stuck but broke free by turning it backwards, then with oil in the cylinders, it rolled all the way over. I pulled the heads anyway to be safe and Im glad I did. THey will filled with mice nests and surface rust.

I have had good lucking pulling the head, cleaning around the top of the piston and cylinder with a wire wheel, then using high pressure air, blowing all the debris out from around the piston to the bore. Then i put Coke Classic in there and let it sit for a while. Every now and then tap on the pistons with a oak block and a 4lb hammer or so. This will help shake it and help the Coke work its way in. The key to any of this is patience. I have had good luck with PB Blaster and ATF as well, but like i said, patience is the main thing. Good luck

PB Blaster and or brake fluid has worked best for me. Keep soaking it in PB Blaster for a while and it will eventually free up. If not, take the motor apart and free it up.

PB works fine on bolts but on in engines. Tranny fluid works the best from what I have found out and out of 20 plus engines so far only 2 or 3 haven't popped free

Look in the cylinders through the spark plug holes, if the pistons are stopped pretty far down on all cylinders, (none up near the top), rock as hard as you can (even two people rocking violently) the tractor has hundreds of times this force going through it when running, !! JimN

all my experience with siezed engines is that that they need to be disassembled and rebuilt. maybe if its lightly stuck soaking works, but i am never that lucky.what unsiezes rings in the piston? what takes care of scratches and pits in cyl. from rust?there is nothing like a honed out cyl. or a new one with a set of new rings.you are at peace in your mind when everything is good.lots of those soakers go for sale afterward and somebody gets stung with em.i know good mechanics do things properly and have a clear conscience.i will by a seized tractor any day before one of those doctored up expensive soakers.this is just my opinion and how i do things.

how was the tractor stored for that lenght of time? shedded or outside? exhaust covered or open? shedded with a covered exhaust. it should loosen up easily. if it was outside, stack open to the elements, you may be looking at a rebuild, possibly a cracked block if you have freezing winters.

I've never had a stuck tractor (yet), but had to deal with many, many outboard motors that were stuck over the years. Use automatic tranny fluid. Used fluid works fine and it is free from any local tranny shop. Sometimes you have to let it soak for upwards of two weeks. One time I had to let one soak for almost three weeks. I just about gave up, but it came loose and that old Johnson 18 ran like a champ.

Use ATF to soak the pistons & keep rocking after it soaks for a day or two. Hal
