The transmission counter shaft can be held by engaging the PTO and using a pipe wrench on the output shaft.

I made a socket by welding a piece of steel key stock inside a 3/4" Drive socket and then turn it off with the impact. It is a tight fit so I had to make the socket very shallow. This does require remvoval of the belly pump though.

It screws on, normal thread. Lock your brakes, and put it in gear, chock the wheels if you want.Use whatever method you wish to get it off, I persoannly have used a square peice of stock and a hammer, a pipe wrench, and/or a combination of them all.

Pat: A hole the size of an apple? Holy Toledo! That will take more than some rtv. I would say junk out that H and get another one. H's are very, very cheap. You can keep the one you have now for parts. By the time you by a good casting and switch everything over, it will be 6 of one and half dozen of another...

The oil is common between the two areas. If it is leaking, it is the Hydraulic pump coupling drive (front of the countershaft in the trans) that is leaking. This can be replaced through the inspection cover (with the pump out) by taking the drive coupling out (housing drained) then removing the coupling (lefty loosy) with a hard steel square to turn it with (serious turning required). then it is obvious. Jim: Say, again, please. I want to learn this. I guess I did not conceptualize - or comprehend - the original problem. mike

From what I imagine he is looking at, the Wall between the trans and finals contains a hole allowing 90wt to go between the two (separate drains due to different lowest sections, common fill hole in deck) thus what he may perceives as a punched hole may be the normal cast hole. Either way it probably will not affect operation. THe seals just get old and leak. JimN

Yes, the "hole" is normal. It's rough because it's a casting, and there was no need to clean it up.
