The main difference between the 826 and the 856 was that the 826 had a german diesel engine. The 826 was only 8 horsepower less than the 856. Lee

The 856 was built from 1967 to 1972, 826 was built from 1970 to 1972. I wouldn't say that the 826 was a stripped down 856, It had all of the same options, only difference is the smaller engine. In fact, aside from the engine, 99% of the parts are the same. The purpose of the 826 was to fill the gap between the 76 horsepower 756 and the 100 horsepower 856. This gave IH an advantage over Deere, as they had no model between the 70 horse 3020 and the almost 100 horse 4020. At about the same time as the 826 came out, Deere started selling the model 4000, which was a stripped down 4020. To compete, IH offered a stripped down 856, called the 856 Custom.

The 856 came first. The 826 was more or less a "stripped down" version of the 856, and the price was a bit lower.
