Help, I've just overhaul my 584 new pistons/liners, valve regrind, new shells, new injector nozzles and pump Overhaul. When it starts it starts bad, runs with white acrid smoke and what looks like either oil or unburt fuel runs down the side of the block ( at present I'm running it without the manifold on to try and see which pot is playing up. Iv'e had the injectors and inector pump checked twice by two different companies and both agree there is nothing wrong I've timed it and retimed it to 14° BTDC and varied a little either way. Theres no loss of compression fuel is good straight from the tank all filters new. No oil in water, no water in oil, No pressure in crankcase. I've timed it to the marks on the gears, are there any other gears which someone could have fitted which would not be marked for the D206 engine, does anyone know what the valve timing should be, so I can check that. Someone give me a clue what to look at next this thing is getting the better of me, never had one I could n't get running sweet

MH, If the compression is indeed good, then it sounds like a Injection pump timing issue, Acrid white smoke is an indication of very late injection timing.
There were 3 engines in this series from Neuss the D155,(3cyl),D206(4cyl), & D310(6cyl). They all used the same inj pump timing gear. There should be a bunch of different numbers stamped on the gear( something like 1 thru 8). One of these #'s will be for your engine in its application. Once the number is aligned with the mark on the idler gear, then the pump can be timed.

Pull the head and put new valves and seats in and button it back up. Then hook it to somthing to load it good and work the snot out of it. Germans don't like to seat new rings. Also make sure your pump timing is dead on, as little as 1 degree off can cause germans to run like crap.

Well to me it sounds like one of two things or both . (1) you have the wrong pistons in it or (2) when they did the valves they ground them into the head to deep and this is causing low compression.

Hi Harry, when you say starts bad, do you mean the engine has to crank several times before starting? How many hours were on engine before overhaul? Just wodering as my brother has 3032 with D206. When this engine is warmed up and timed properly it should start on the one rev of the engine.
Here is my experience with 454 with D179 same engine as D206 but 3 cyl instead of 4. Dad had the fan belt brake on him while plowing and he overheated the engine and then the cylinder sleeve "O" rings start to leak coolant into the crankcase .. he had IH replace "O" rings, hone the sleeves and replace the piston rings. Well when IH returned the 454 it was running just like you describe your 584 smoking and sounding like it is missing. The IH mechanic said that they usually put the tractors on the dyno for about 5 hours after an overhaul to seat the rings but their dyno was broken and awaiting parts. So mechanic said just go out and work the 454 hard for a few hours and the rings will seat and all will be good. He was correct. Well it is 20 years later and 454 is still running great with over 15,000 Hrs on engine.

Where is the fluid that's running down the side of the block coming from? The exhaust? If it's out of the exhaust I would hink that it's unburned fuel.White smoke is sometimes water, you don't have a head gasket leaking water into the cylinder?Possibly on upside down or something like that.

Not familiar with your tractor. Not even a little bit.

However, white diesel smoke usually means a "miss"; grey means out of time. Does that thing have a German Nuess engine?

Can't grind the valves and/or seats on those things, 'cause it lowers the compression. The deck height has to be exactly on spec.

Like I say, I dunno. Just trying to help ya get 'er done.
