I have recently ontained a F12. I am not having any luck finding the serial number plate. I was also wondering if the motor was the original motor. I has a chevy 4 cylinder with the number 46200304 serial number. as well as F15 8 on it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Matt,

Assumeing that your newly acquired F-12 has the same enging it came from the factory with you can date that little thing by reading the serial number which is stamped into a flat spot on the engine block very near the fuel pump. If you don't have the key indexing your serial number to it's year of manufacture, post it here and folks will date it for you.

I was in a hurry perusing and only read your first line Matt before responding. You will need advice from some of the IHC "Gurus" that inhabit this place.
Good luck.

The engine is NOT original, the ONLY engines F-12's used were made by IH and the very early models used a Waukesha engine. There were no Chevy engines. If your serial # plate is still on the tractor, it is mounted with 4 rivets on the front fuel tank support. The thing I would do is look for casting codes on the tractor, (not the engine), it should tell you the year with the letter at the end of the code.

The Chevy engine isnt original to the tractor at all. The serial number was on the frame rail, a plate on the rear facing side of the front fuel tank support, or on the engine block. (Count the last one out since your engine is gone).

This is the second time this week I have heard someone say that the F-12s had the SN stamped on the frame rail. I have never seen one this way. But I would like to see a photo if it is true.

The F-12s did not have casting date codes other than on the hydraulic lift assemblies so he won"t be able to tell that way. If the engine has been swapped then the front tank support has probably been removed or changed. So I would say you are pretty much out of luck on determining the year of it.

AAAHHHHH H!!!!! !!!!! Your right, my brain just aint working right this week. Although my neighbor claimed his old 12 had it on the rail, it was a Waukesha.

John,
Could you double check that with your neighbor?
I have a Waukesha that is missing the tag. I have never been able to find anything on it, and have never seen an F-12 with the # stamped anywhere but on the tag.

I know on other F series tractors, the serial number was stamped on the left frame rail. I have restored a 35 F-12, and should know the answer to this, but don't. The serial number should be under the fuel tank on the front fuel tank support, unless it is missing. Should be held on with four rivets, unless it is gone, and empty holes exist where it once was riveted. F-12s never had any other engine except the IH 4 cyl. Only exception, is the first year when they used a Waukesha engine until IH designed their own. Hope this helps. Jerry

Thanks I will look tomorrow about the plate. I know it is a chevy motor it has a bowtie under the valve cover, as well as the side of the block but i dont know how to look up the motor.
