I should have my 484 back together next week and was wondering how to bleed the air out of the fuel system. I know how to bleed the air out of the system up to the 2nd filter. Is there some way to get it out of the injection pump?

Hi Mike, my method for those Bosch injection pumps without a lift pump is to set your air compressor output to about 10 PSI, open the bleed screws on the filters, stick your air gun nozzle in the filler spout of the fuel tank and stuff a clean cloth around it and pressurize the fuel tank. This will force the fuel out to filters, close primary filter bleed screw when air bubbles stop then secondary filter bleed screw, loosen the nut on the easiest to access injector line at the back of the injection pump, put Stop/Start/Stop lever to Start position, throttle 1/2 open and crank engine ... should start within a few revs then tighten nut on injector line. If engine doesn't start don't crank to long and overheat the starter. Never had to loosen more than one injector line but there is always exceptions.
Be-careful with the high pressure Diesel fuel from the injector lines ... 3200 PSI can cause serious damage to skin.

If you just overhauled the D179 with new rings etc it may run ruff for several hours until the rings are seated.

There's the what the manual says..then how I do it. The manual will say to loosen the small 5/16"(?) bolts (one at a time), then operate the lift pump, or something to that effect.

The way I do it is, make sure that filters are bleed, crack no.1 injector (the closet to the fan),back off the nut a couple of turns and start the tractor. Once it fires a couple of times I stop and tighten the nut back up.
Good Luck. Hound

The method mentioned above will work, or, you could just leave all three lines loose at the injectors, bleed it up to the filters, then crank until you get fuel out of all three lines, tighten them back up, and it should start almost instantly. Let it run at about half throttle for five minutes, and then it should be free of air. The extra cranking time should also help to build oil pressure.
