Can a 424 be split at transmission by shifter or does engine need split first then remove clutch pack an so on to pull clutch case ? Anyone know since I have confused myself with manual reading ?
Thanks for any help...

Hi, I believe you can look in the transmission by taking the transmission cover off. The cover where the gear shift lever is mounted. A neighbour broke an axle on a 434(same frame as 424) one time and he had to remove the hydraulic housing off the top of the rear end to get the C clip off the inner axle.
Hope you can find a service manual to help you.

Hi, are you attempting to change the transmission and PTO clutch? If so you split the tractor at the bell housing just at the rear of the engine. The 424 should be similar to 434/444 and will have a dual stage clutch with the larger clutch being the transmission and the smaller one the PTO. These units are a bit trickery to re-install and adjust than the single stage clutch found in most other models.

JimB2 - need to get into trans to see if bearing or gear tooth broken. Have a knock that I feel in the seat of my pants. Have narrowed it down to tranny. Just wondering if can split either location or have to work from bell housing back. IH2444 mentioned access door but it does not answer if a spline/yoke is in tranny side or if it is a solid shaft from trans to flywheel. Will be finding out it looks like by starting from engine and working back. Lot more work that way but do not want to tear anything up trying a short cut. If find it could have been done at tranny case I'll mumble some strong words and keep on gett'n on.

I have a 2444/444 I think they are prtty much the same. I have not had to split mine yet though.
Doesn't yours have the large inspection plate underneath ?
You can learn a lot by looking up thru there.

I have a 484 apart now, Im not real sure on what your talking about. The 424 may be alot different then a 484. The only place I can split the 484 is where the engine bolts to the clutch housing. Then the flywheel and clutch assembly is attatched to the engine.

Can separate at bell housing as well as another location just in front of shifter on the 424.
Just not sure in my reading manual if have to unbolt at engine first to remove clutch , carrier bearing mount , etc. to slide off or it is a splined shaft at this location?
Thanks.
