Been looking for a good sickle mower for months. Missed out on a very nice JD for $900, a nice NH for $650. Friday I learned there was an auction Sat. that had an IH 1300. Called the owner said it was in very good condition. Problem, 9' sickle. (I felt my tractor will only handle a 6 or 7'). Thought I might go anyhow just so someone else didn't steal it. Figured anything under $400 would be a bargain. But 100 miles away. Got up Sat. Figured it'd cost $50 for gas just to go there and waste a Sat. Decided not to go. Called there this AM cause I couldn't stand not knowing. He said most things did real good but not much interest in the mower. I had to ask. Went for $125.00 !!! Wow, really blew it there.

Where are you? I have a JD 350 7 footer, and an IH 1100 7 footer here in SD for sale.

If you get a 9ft. mower try it befor you do anything foolish with the cutting torch. You could buy or trade for a shorter cutter bar. Armand

That's not what I wanted to hear.
I have a JD 770 25hp. It runs the 6' I have with no problem but does work it if the hay is really heavy, like ist cutting.
Anyhow I blew it. I was thinking today. Couldn't I just take a torch and cut 2' off the sickle bar, re-drill it and bolt the shoe back on the end? Thoughts?

I've pulled a 9' bar with my Farmall A, no problems. Usually use it on the 7 footer mowing road ditches, though.

Don't know how small your tractor is but I do know that an unstyled JD model B with a 7' sickle mower could keep up with a JD model A or an IH M when mowing hay. These same 3 tractors would have had no problems with a 9' cutter bar. Armand

When I was a boy, we routinely pulled a 9' bar with both a 50 JD and the H in heavy waist-high irrigated alfalfa.

What are they? 25 horse?

Once that sickle is moving, not to worry. All ya gotta do is slide that bar along the ground. :>)

Agreed, I mowed a lot hay with a 9' 1100 (?) on the back of an H. The only time it would have a problem was in prairie hay with worn out ledger plates.
