I have SW-6 that recently began negative charging. The system is still 6 volt. However, the battery does not seem to be losing a charge. Been a little reluctant to mess with it, thought about changing out the voltage regulator, but thought I would post this first. Would appreciate comments.

As the others indicate, it needs to be checked with a volt meter to make sure it is actually charging. A good battery will run a Farmall/IH for as much as week of use before failing to start. If the gauge reads "0" with nothing on, then if the lights are turned on, it reads discharge, and if the tractor is running at 1/2 throttle or above, it still shows discharge, it is in need of repair. Use the search for box above for finding John T charging system steps. THat in concert with Bob M wiring diagrams are the eventual answer. JimN

Has the battery been replaced lately? Did it get installed backwards[negative grounded]? If it has, & the generator has been polarized for neg ground, It could indeed be showing discharge on the meter while actually charging. Do as Hal says & see what the voltage is running first.

You need to measure the charging voltage at your battery with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better.
You should be getting from 7 to 7.25 volts. If you're getting this voltage your amp meter may be the problem. Hal
