I am looking at a Farmall 560 in my area with a loader. Can you guys tell me what i should look out for with this tractor? ( I have run only fords before this). Any particularly weak points I should watch out for? He is asking around 4K. Is that reasonable if the tractor is sound? Thanks for your help.

There has been a lot of noise about 560"s over the years, BUT on the farm my brother is still using the one that my dad got in the late fifties early 60"s as new demonstrator, At the time it became the big tractor replacing the 400 as #1, it pulled 4- 14"s, disced, baled and chopped for years till it lost it #1 spot to the Ford 8000, Untill this last year it was used every day on the manure spreader and is still used every day on the feed wagon, I would hate to have to count the number of 3 beater wagon full of silage it has pulled, the rear tires have been bumped up to 16.9 x 38"s at its major overhaul 15+ years ago it got bumped to 706 size, the brakes have been used for decades to turn with, the TA has never been pulled to leave it parked, parked in gear it will not roll down hill if the brake latch jumps off. It is still a good starting pulling running tractor with in excess of 20,000 hours on it. "O" by the way it is a narrow front end that has been used all it"s life on hilley ground, sidehill as well as up and down.

RedTail, Back to the rearend troubles these tractors had....The tractors that had been updated will have a "Delta" stamp as a suffix to the Serial #.
A "Delta" if you do not know is a small equilateral triangle, point up. So if the tag has that sm triangle after the Ser-# then that tractor, had been pushed to the breaking point then, fixed and updated way back when.
If no Delta stamp, itwasn't worked all that hard. I wouldn't make it a deal breaker. Just view it as a plus if it has that stamp! Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I ran 560 D"s with 2mhd pickers and never broke an axle. Never had rear end or transmission trouble. These were some of the best tractors i owned. In my opinion They were great but now they are right at 50 years old.

I do not recall many problems with the axles with IH pickers installed but there were a lot of problems with axles and bearings when they were used with New Idea pickers. When you had a mounted picker installed you learned how to replace axles and bearings by removing the PTO rather than the transmission cover.

I picked corn with M"s 400"s and 560"s and went over a lot of acres and never had axle trouble with any of them. Always a 2m picker. New Idea never sold much equipment around here. That 2m picker had to be a lot heavier than a new idea.

In response to the weak differential, we farmed with a Farmall 560 a number of years ago and the problem we had was weak axle housings. One time while cultivating potatoes the problem we had was using the brakes while turning into a set of rows. Sometimes we had to brake hard because we didn"t have much of a headland..... wanted to take advantage of all the tillable. So My advise is, be careful of braking it to help you turn. A mechanic once told Me that Harvester didn"t beef up the castings to take the added power. They using were using the housings from the 400 series in the early years, I know there was a recall on that problem and I'm not sure how you could tell if it has been corrected.

RedTail,We had a 460 and a 560,both diesels and both were good tractors. But these two and every one I've ever seen had the hinge plate(?) broken and welded. This plate was bolted under the center of the tractor.I think this is where the fasthitch pulled from and I believe the draft control was linked to this as well. It's been years folks so correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.So don't be alarmed if you see this welded.KEEP THESE BOLTS TIGHT! I can tell you that our 560D was a horse.I can only imagine what the farming community thought when these were introduced in ,I think 1958,replacing the old style 400 series. They had their problems but man what a styling change.Like most any machine RedTail,if you run it right it will work a long time for you. Just my thoughts.A.J.

By the way always have the torq. pulled back when you shut off the tractor, the torq. will last longer.

Didn't say proper adjustment wasn't the most important just trying to offer help, you do it your way if you want I'm still going to pull the T.A. back it doesn't take that much work, it has something to do with the free wheeling when the T.A. is back in those old models. Use the brakes instead of the engine to keep her from moving.

Gary The Tractor Vet has learned things mortals will never learn. He also is correct in this case. The TA is not sensitive at all to being left in any position. If forward, it will hold the tractor from moving when the engine is stopped in the lower gears, though brakes should always be used to park a tractor. He is a plain speekin man. JimN

I would never disrespect anyone with knowledge and success, you don't do that. I was only stating what Lem Long, half owner of Helland and Long Imp. Belmond, Ia. told us in 1956. I feel he deserves some respect in regard to this issue, it was never my intention to question anyone's knowledge or expertise. I unfortunatly cannot call Lem or his Partner Lunk Helland as they are both deceased. I did not respond to this question to be confronted with disrespect,my response was only to help a person looking to buy a tractor I believe in, isn't that the real issue? You guy's make me glad I bought a Ford.

I understand where you are coming from, and respect it. I have been "repaired" in many ways from interacting here. My intent was to let you know that T.Vet is direct in his comments. We have a lot to learn from each other. Please don't consider this )or comments above as a rebuff. JimN

I would think if you were in gear with the clutch in when you shut off the engine nothing could turn backwards. It would be disconnected.

The dealer told us after we took the torq. out of a 400 that it had something to with the motor rolling backwards on shut off it would damage the T.A.,so we did that on all the tractors we had and wives tale or not we never bought another T.A. Try it you'll like it.

Loved that 560,she was a 62 diesel.Had a loader on it when it was new,fed many cattle hauled a lot of pucky, the clutch went out the second year then we put in a heavy duty, no more trouble. If you get it I'll be surprised if you don't like it. Our's had 6000 hrs. and was never touched other than the clutch from the abuse we gave it in the barnyard. By the way I just bought my first pair of ford grey underwear 5 days ago after wearing red all my life,so now I can use you as another source of knowledge. GOOD LUCK!

The hydraulic tubing that runs under the seat can wear thru and leak on the platfrom. Fixable of course. The early 560's that were sold with potentially weak rear ends were recalled? for a fix. I think they may have stamped the name plate with a triangle if they were fixed (others on this forum will know the facts). For 4K I would expect a fast hitch, wide front, good rear tires, runs good and everyting to work (except the TA). Dan

These tractors originally came with a heavy duty inner axle bearing and a standard outer axle bearing. The biggest change was to install a heavy duty bearing on the outer end of the axle and replace the inner heavy duty ball bearing with a roller bearing. The rear mainshaft bearing was also changed to a roller bearing,

When they were new I guess they had a problem with busting final drives. I am not sure if it was certain years or all of them. I think factory recalled or made a better unit. ( could be wrong but someone told me that ) I know a few of them pull against my 620 in 7000 and 7500 lb class. They blow my doors off. But they have 60 hp and I only have 46.
