I ducked out of work early today so I could scoot up to a tractor salvage yard to look for tires. The one I was at last week had nothing. So I expected to just settle for an odd pair of weathered crap just to get me by. I went to the office and talked to the nice fellow I know who's helped me out a great deal and told him what I'm looking for. I said "16x550 tri-rib would be perfect, but I am past picky." He told me he just had some parted out front end come in off a NewHolland that had practically new 16x550's on it. Go check it out. Dirty, yes. But I couldn't find a scratch out of them! Like they had bought the tires, ran them for a little bit, and the tractor blew up so they parted it out!

I got the pair, plus tubes for $60!! I'll be picking them up Tuesday, giving them time to pull them off the wheels.
WOO HOO!!

That's not something I'm prepared or ready to do yet. The guy with the sand blaster isn't available for a while, so what I am doing in the morning is taking the front end to a friend's who has a wire brush, and I'm gonna knock as much of that old paint off as I can. I'm gonna then spray can them with some primer just to hold them until I am ready to take the whole tractor apart and paint it properly.

I want to get the tractor down on it's wheels so I can put it back together and get it re-wired and running before April 18th.

I read the brand, but forgot what it is already. It was nothing I had heard of. Didn't see a ply, but they were very dirty and laying at an odd angle. I find out more when I get them and clean them up.

Here's your chance to sharpen up your paint and bodywork skills. Get the front rims blasted, then apply one good coat of etching primer. Let dry for a day and apply primer-sufacer.Then inspect for pits and major dings. If you have some then sand, reprime and sand til smooth. If not final sand with 320 , prepsol and tack. Then mixing the argent silver paint from the IH dealer 8:1:2 (paint/hardener/reducer) Spray them two full coats. Get your gun adjusted just right by doing the inside of the rim first. Let dry til you can drag the BACK of your forefinger lightly on them without sticking, and spray two more coats. Don't do this with out a proper mask, and do it outside. Early in the am and NO WIND. Hose down the work area a light mist will do. Shapes like wheels are very forgiving, and they are easy to sand if you do get a run or orange peel, or heaven forbid, fisheyes (oily surface)

Gordo -- If you have blasted the rims, there is no need for etch. Use epoxy and you can put the surfacer on in 30 minutes --- .

I do use the epoxy on all cast parts and tin. But even though wheels sre blasted There has to be minute particles of rust there. So I go the extra mile and metal prep and rinse them and then the etch primer. My paint sheets say that paint can be applied directly over the epoxy primer. SOmetimes a part will come out looking flawless witht smooth epoxy primer only. Have you ever painted over it w/o a coat of primer?

Gordo, these have been painted with PPG epoxy primer, scuffed with scotch-brite, and sprayed with PPG acrylic urethane with hardener...

This tractor sits outside all summer, painted about five years ago and no signs of fading or discoloring yet. Wish I could find the decals for it...

I'm not sure how this pickup looks, I sold it a couple weeks after painting. :)
