Super A Crank pulley

Got my Super A crank pulley off this morning, built myslf a Keith in OR type puller, worked very well, thank you Keith.

Now that I have the pulley off there seems to be a slight shoulder on the end beyond where seal runs. I call it that as the rest of the pulley is the same size as where the seal has been making contact. Is this a candidate for a speedy sleeve?

I haven't taken the time to check the new seal on the pulley, just yet. I've had company here all week and they are leaving after lunch. Then I can get back to full time tractoring.

Hugh,
If you get the IH (CaseIH) seal kit #378193R91 from your local dealer, that includes the seal and the needed wear ring for the front pulley.
The change up part numbers from the original, by pass this number and changes up to a seal only. The kit with the wear ring is a better deal. Gently heat the wear ring and it will go on the pulley fairly easily.

Don: Thanks for that part number, got brousing through parts online, much to my surprise I see the pulley is still available from CaseIH. I would have thought they were history.

Hi Hugh -

I've never had a Super A apart. However the Super H and M crank pulley hub have a straight (no shoulder/groove) hub sealing surface. I suspect your S/A's pulley hub is similar.

One repair option is to install a speedy sleeve as you suggest.

Another option - depending on the thickness of the replacment seal and if the new one is thinner - is to position the new seal in the front cover so the seal lip rides on an unworn portion of the pulley hub.

I've had good luck with this method on tranny shaft seals on both my Farmalls and my old Minnie-Mo U.

Bob: The Super A is the same, and there is close to 3/4" of surface. The surface is unform size except for this 3/16" wide x 1/16" high rise on the inner end of pulley hub, that will be just behind the seal when installed. I did slide the seal on over that and it does fit snug to the surface, all positions. I can feel a bit of roughness on that surface though, thus I'm thinking the sleeve may be the best approach. That said, probably Don's suggested seal part number is the way to go. I see the part listing on CaseIH parts on line. I was also quite surprised to see the pulley still available new from CaseIH.
