First, some background: My '44 H has been sitting for 10 years. It has an aftermarket start button, on/off toggle switch, solenoid, and voltage regulator. It has a distributor on it.

I've bought a new "stock" starting button and Original Pull on/Push off switch (two prong for the distributor).
I'm going to pull off the solenoid and the aftermarket buttons and install the regular switches. I've recently learned that I don't need the generator and Voltage Regulator to get the tractor running.
So, how should I wire the tractor now, just to get it running? I am unsure of the condition of the VR, so I don't know whether to include it in the system or not. Maybe I should get the charging system and VR tested to see if they work, and include them if they do?

You might as well go ahead and pull the genny and regulator and just do it, youve been told more than once you dont need it to get it running, but you keep saying you want to get them tested so just go ahead and do it already! For it to run all you need is one wire from the battery to the switch, then to the distributor. Youre not going to hurt the battery any by not having the charging system going yet.

If the generator and regulator are on the tractor, either remove the generator belt or take the wire off of the "F" terminal of the generator. This will make sure the generator doesn't try to charge, which could cause problems if it isn't properly wired to the battery.

Don't hook it back up until you are ready to work on the charging system.

Mike - you don't need the generator/VR to run the tractor. (The ignition and the generator/voltage regulator are two completely separate systems that just happen to be connected to the same battery....each operates completely independently of the other.)

To wire the ignition, simply run a wire from the ammeter terminal that's NOT connected to the batterr. Run this wire to either terminal on the ignition switch. Run a 2nd wire from the other ign switch terminal to the coil primary terminal that's NOT connected to the distributor. That's it!

As long as you've got a charged battery the tractor can now be started and run.
