I need to replace the front trans seal on my 42 A.
It looks as though to gain axcess all I have to do is disconect the drive flange and bolts that attach tork tube from front of trans. Is this it
or am I missing somthing? Any coments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ray

I don't remember just where you are in the project. Is the tractor currently split?

I was tearin' mine down completely when I changed mine, so it wasn't an issue for me, but I think you're probably going to have to split it behind the engine, then slip the torque tube off over the driveshaft, then remove the driveshaft. I say that only because I think, if you only split at the tranny, you'll have to open the split up five or six inches anyway to get working room to get the shaft off and back onto the flange, (and probably more to get room to drive the new seal in) and you'd run into trouble gettin' the driveshaft back through the clutch and into the pilot bushing. If you did get into that kind of trouble, you'd wind up havin' to split at the engine anyway to get it back together.

If somebody else has done it just splittin' at the rear and can tell ya how to do it, that'd be great, but tryin' to picture what I did, that's my two cents.

Thanks for your reply.
Basically everything attached to the trans case is removed and resealed with the exception of the tork tube and everything forward. I am working from the back to front in my restoration.I was able to remove the nuts from the drive flange via the access hole but am I in for any surprises when seperating the trans frome the tube? Thanks Ray

Can't think of any. I'd just try to keep the driveshaft seated on the front end in the pilot bushing. At the very least, as far forward as you can keep it. As long as you have the clutch linkage undone, and throttle and choke links (and any electrical stuff) undone, it ought to come right away.

Apart from that the only thing I can think of is to look for a woodruff key between the flange and the tranny shaft when you take it apart. I can't remember if that is inside or outside the seal, but they have an awful way of gettin' away from ya.

And be sure to clean any mouse nests out of the torque tube while you have it off. Let us know how ya make out!
