My experience with F-series is strictly limited to my 1938 F-14 so I can't really make comparisions.

OTOH, my Dad farmed when letter series Farmalls were the cutting edge, and I grew up with mag-fired Farmalls and John Deeres, so I do have some experience in the general area.

When I rebuilt my F14, I sent the mag out and had it professionally rebuilt. That was 10 years ago, and since then I've had it on and off the tractor for one reason or another several times, with no problems. If the mag is hot, timing is important (as it is on any spark ignition engine) but I wouldn't call it "critical". It's actually fairly forgiving if everything else is on.

The downdraft carb and fuel pump are somewhat more maintenance intensive than a straight gravity system, but again, I wouldn't use the word "critical". The biggest problem I had was a bad float, and at the time repro floats weren't available (or if they were, I couldn't find a source) so I spent quite a lot of time finding a good original. With that fixed, the carb too is actually fairly forgiving in the sense that the engine will start and run (sort of) without having everything spot-on.

Having said all that, it IS a LOT easier to crank-start the ol' girl when everything is dead on.

The only real complaint I have about my F14 is that that thing is THIRSTY! Sure glad I don't have to farm 40 acres with it.

The only complaint would be the fuel system because of the down draft carb requiring a fuel pump. Like any machine they are only going to be as good as the maintaince they get and and in this case a little more is required in the fuel department. That being said more than 130000 were sold and used extensively with great success. In their day the $525 spent on one was the best value. They were good on fuel and could pull a two bottom plow in light soil. Cheaper, more versatile, and more dependable than the horse they replaced. IMHO

While I will agree they can be a pain sometimes, I know it took me close to 5 years to get mine to run RIGHT, I dont think some of the comments I have seen lately are deserving of these little tractors. They are great little tractors, for what they were designed for, not one of IHs best designes, but a good tractor none the less. The probelm, as I see it, is the aftermarket is not quite up to par as say a 20 or 30, Heck, new floats just became available a couple of years ago. They are no NEW rims for the 40" tires, so the hubs get chopped up on the steel wheels, and theyre just not as many salvage yards that have these out there. What we have to rememeber is that even though there are "lots" of them out there, soon there wont be because the owners of these get fed up with them and sell them for scrap or they just rot away. Mine will be in the barn for as long as I can maintain it, and even later.

Farmallb: I'm not into F series tractors, but I have been around YT discussion some 8 years now, and I wouldn't say any of these have a bad reputation. Seeing as how most of them are close to 80 years old, I expect there are a few difficult tractors amoung the ones that haven't been well maintained.

I had a neighbor with a 12, never took long once he went to the shed until the tractor was out the door. Now I agree he was an excellent diagnostic mechanic on those old mag tractors. All I can say the diagnosing must have been quick if his 12 was ever difficult.

The straight gasoline engines are difficult to start if they have been sitting for some time as the fuel in the carburetor evaporates and one has to crank the engine over for some time for fuel to refill the bowl before setting the magneto to start. Most of the fuel from the pump goes back to the tank as there is only about 1/2 inch head on the line to the carburetor. Mine is an O-12 but has the same engine and fuel system. The later F-14 and the standard (O,W, Fairway) tractors with kerosene engines are easier as they have a gravity feed starter tank. Once the engine is running the fuel supply from the pump is fine.

I have a F12 that will start no matter what, and a F14 that will only start if you pull it,They got to be perfect,Mags has to be hot, timming needs to be perfect, valves are critical, and the carb.arent as simple as you think, fuel pumps are a pain

Never had a problem with my F-12 or my brother's F-14... other than the fuel pumps, but a quick rebuild kit and an hour later they run again. Nearly the same engine as the A/B/C... but that dumb down-draft carburetor and fuel pump.
