300 utility steers hard

Is it the nature of the 300 utility to be a little hard to steer?
I fixed and painted a 300 and removed the loader.
(previous owner hated it because with a load it
was a bearcat to steer)
I've heard the short wheel base contributed to
harder steering;
I might sell it and want to know what to tell
potential buyers.

Best thing to do with those utilities is to switch over to a modern, fully hydraulic steering. One ram on each side, a rotary hydraulic valve, a priority valve, and some hoses should put you in business. Might have to fabricate some custom brackets...

Hank...I may get shot for this, but I flat got tired of fooling with my 350U which had the same set up except for it's power steering. Just got tired of it.
Went to a junk yard and bought a PS unit off a 3000 Ford someone had mistreated. Made an adapter plate for the mounting and bolted it up.
That puppy works like a charm now. Painted it red to cover up the blue and off we go.
I have a loader on it and it is really nice.
Now if I could only find an orignal IH aux fuel tank to help with that small useless fuel tank I would be in business.

I really, really want to see pics of this. Did you use the arms and tie rod ends from the Ford, too? Any trouble hooking the hoses up? Will this work on a 340 utility?

Thanks!

Will try and get some photos when I get to the farm this weekend...or next. Been so darn much rain here I have not been going out there.
Used the Ford arms...the IH linkage to the steering arms at the front. Had to ream the holes in the Ford arms just a little to get the IH linkage to work.
Had the lines made up at a Hyd hose place. Used the Ford fittings on one end and the IH on the other. Not pretty...but it works.
Just had to make a plate to bolt it to the tractor as the bolt holes were no where close.
Been working fine for over a year so far.

I believe if you took the time to read all the posts on this forum about the steering system failures on these tractors, you would know - without a doubt - you want to sell it. Either way, best of luck. mike

Yep if its a manual steering one its the nature of it, that was one of the big problems the 300U had BTDT and I know how hard it is since a friend has one that I work on for him

With manual steering they are hard to steer. The gear box has some binding parts, (mainly the small stub riding in a spiral track) which never worked well. There are few parts available. and repair is expensive with specialized machining and welding needed to bring them bacl. There is a company making replacement systems (not stock), and very much heavy duty. It is in the archives here. If they are tight and just difficult to turn, putting moly based synthetic lubricant in it might prolong its life. JimN
