I am working on a Farmall C. Around the real axle where it comes out of the housing when driven it leaks oil. I figured ther was a seal in that flange piece that bolts on. So I started working on getting the back wheel broken loose so I could slide it off to remove the flange that is held by four bolts. As I was sliding the wheel off I noticed the axle moves in and out about 1/4" to 3/8" is this indicating I have a bigger problem or is this normal. If the axle isn't suppose to slide in and out that amount what do I need to look at for the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Normally there isn't any oil in the final drive, only grease. The Oil from the tranny is kept back with an oilseal in the tranny. The bearing in the finaldrive is lubricated with grease, as you should notice a lubricationpoint in the "flange" you where referring to. The bullgear is mounted right onto the axle, so it's probably just came lose.. Open up the tranny and you'll probably see the problem right away.. Besides, you'll have to open up the tranny anyways if you want to replace the oil seal...

Hope I could be of any help!

You don't have to remove the tranny cover to replace the inner seal. You can remove the pto and get to everything that way. There are two long, fine threaded bolts that hold the retaining plate for the bull gear. With the pto cover off you can reach in and with a 9/16" wrench remove the bolts. I neat trick is to leave the back wheel on the axle and once you have the bolts loosened you can spin the back wheel and with the wrench on the bolts spin the bolts right out. I used a cherry picker and removed the axle with the wheel still on the axle. I was replacing the gasket between the axle housing and the rear end so everything came out together. Then you can get to the inner bearing and seal.

The seal coming out of the tranny is leaking as there should not be any oil leaking out of the shaft there nor should there be end play. Mite just as well pull the tranny cover off so you can fix the problem.

I have had that same thing, mine was the nut had came loose on the end of the axle.Drain the oil down so you can pull the pto unit out, reach in see if it is loose. If that's it it's an easy fix. Good luck. Wildman

Your axle bearing may be worn, This would cause the seal to leak.
