966 Starter problem

Last May I wrote several messages here because my 966 wouldn't crank. I had the starter rebuilt finally. Checked batteries, cleaned everything, and then it just came to life after I removed and reinstalled the starter. Yesterday same symptoms. Bright lights, good gauges, just a sharp pop, but not crank. After removing batteries, charging them, cleaning all the terminals. same result. On a hunch I jacked up one rear side,( not easy when they are frozen in the soil/ice). Rotated the tire/wheel 90 degrees and hit the stater. Fired off in about 2 revs. What is causing this? I had the engine heater plugged in, but I had not run the tractor since late NOV. It was 20 degrees ambient air temp. As a kid I remember the old "flat spot" on the Ford flathead starter. Just bump the car in 3rd gear and off you go. Is this similar?

Gordo, I had similar problem with my 966. I thought it was a solenoid. I changed it, and didn't help. Found out it was a bad starter button. Changed it and haven't had anymore problems.

Gordo,

Did they get that field strap tight on the solenoid? The nut in behind the strap too?

That "snap" is electrical. Could be anything including a bad cable that "appears" good.

Possibly really bad teeth on the flywheel ring gear? Turning the engine by hand shouldn't have changed anything in the starter unless the drive was jammed into the ring gear.

Unless the starter was jammed into the ring gear? If it is "jamming" what is the fix? And can you define jamming and what causes it? Misalignment? Starter is brand new. It doesn't make a noise like the starter is skipping teeth. No noise like bendix hitting and missing. Just an electrical "snap" and nothing more.

An electrical snap, is an indication of either a bad ground, or a bad connection. Next time it quits operating, check with a volt meter to see where electricity is not getting. JimN
