The original subject was "Re: 140 xmission oil leaking from axle housingadvice?".

Hugh, read some old strings about Hy Tran vs gear oil and noise. My 58 140 #1105 J has Lucas 80w-90 in it up to the drain plug by the left brake rod. But it whines quite loud in all gears. I can hear it over the engine and exhaust sounds. Its also kind of touch in reverse - wants to run away so I have to ride clutch carefully in reverse. Any thoughts? Is this normal?

Thanks all for the replies. Splitting the tractor and doing gears is way over my head. Just read the I&T manual too. :D I redrained the transmission box and pto and pulley box. Looked like oozing molasses w bubbles in it. Put new Lucas 80w-90 in and seemed to quite down some except in reverse. Will keep reading the manuals and your posts to learn. Thanks-Pa. PS: Ma already says can't spend any more money and weekends on/with my tractor!!

Is the front seal on the tranny leaking. If you are going to split it to replace the seal do the input bearing also as i have found that bearing can cause a lot of noise as when i have replaces bearing and seal the tranny was much quieter.

Pa: If your talking transmission and final drives, 80W-90 or heavier. Noise is probably worn gears or bearings. The 140 are quite fast in reverse. Problem with the speed, over the years, folks kept replaceing with larger tires. IH did the same and never changed the gears ratio. There is a big difference between 9.5x24 as on A and SA and 12.4x24. I have both and the 12.4 is 6" higher than 9.5.

My grandfather has a 62 140 that he bought new. It has always scrubbed when putting it into gear and the trans. has always been loud. He said that while it was under warranty the dealer put 140w in it to try to make it easier to shift but it didn"t make much difference. He has run 90w ever since and it has held up fine and we have just put up with the scraping gears and loud transmission. I"ll second the fact that reverse is fast in a 140 and high gear is too fast for the tire size. We used that 140 and an A to pull tobacco trailers and the A would handle a load in high gear much better than the 140. Of course, 3rd gear in the 140 is not too much slower than high gear in the A.
