Early A Questions

Starting restoration on a '39 A. I ordered a set of decals from this website and they just don't seem to fit. The upper part of the decal on the hood goes all the way to the rounded edge that goes to the top of the hood. I can barely see the "M" on the old lettering and it is a good 30% smaller. What gives?

Also, the decal for the side of the hood has "McCormack-Deering" above the Farmall. I've noticed on posted pictures that most decals do not have the Deering part on the decal. Which is correct? Where can I find pictures of EXACTLY what these looked like from the factory?

Next, did early 39 A's have a brushguard under the foot pedals? What about a foot rest?

Another question. This tractor was either seriously abused or was in an accident that broke the spokes in the right front wheel (they are welded). It also broke the engine block on the right side where the front bolts to the block. The block has been welded. My brother thinks the weld will not hold and some sort of brace from the front bolts back to the bolts to the torque tube needs to be fashioned for better support.

Otherwise it's in good shape for it's age (hand crank-no starter or PTO)

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can find exact decal placement in Guy Fay's
book FARMALL LETTER SERIES TRACTORS. I got my copy from Amazon.com.

Let's see. Haven't noticed the steering wheel but it does have the turn screws for the sheet metal and the overflow tube is in the center of the radiator. The brush guard is missing so that's why I asked if they had one. The number on the engine is 1335 if I remember correctly. I haven't checked the transmission for any numbers.

Those decals weren't cheap so I may be calling them tomorrow and asking what the deal is on them not fitting correctly. Also, I ordered a pulley fan belt and got a generator belt (which it doesn't have).

You do have an early one mine has the block changed and the seat bracket was removed. But the sheet metal is great and the spring loaded kill sw was there no pedal guard. I got mad at not starting the best so i put a starter on. Then while i had the steering sector off and rebuilding i thought just why dont we take off front cover and check timing marks and guess what off one tooth now great starting.

Sounds like you got a bad set of decals as they should fir the hood easy. Your print is ok as thats the way the early ones were. Does your have the spring loaded sw to ground the mag? Is the overflow tube running down the center of the radiator. Does yours have the 1/4 turn screws for the sheetmetal. Real early ones had serial# fastened to the pedal guards. Also had bottom fastener for the grill down underneath and not below the crank opening. Does your have the three spoke bakelite steering wheel. What are the casting codes on the tranny and engine?

Come to think of it, the steering wheel is covered with some sort of cloth-like tape. So you're saying they used bakelite instead of the rubber? Didn't know that. So, the next question is how to refurbish a bakelite steering wheel?
