Got the gas tank clean, painted and installed a new sediment bowl assembly and gave it a whirl. Same old story so I loosened the verticle distributor, retarded it a smidge and tried it again. It actually ran for a few seconds and died. Two more tries, same thing so I loosened the distributor again and gave it a smidge more. In my haste I forgot to tighten the distrubutor down and when I hit the starter I saw the distributor rise up a little and evidently it's way out now. Picked up my tools and went to the house, thinking of sending myself to bed without supper!

If you need to turn the engine but the crank mechanism is stuck or missing, use the belt pulley. Put the transmission in neutral and the belt pulley in gear. If you take the pulley off the flange, you can put a couple of bolts back in the flange and use a pry bar to turn the pulley shaft and thus the engine. I've also just put a bolt in the flange, tightened it up and used a socket with a breaker bar handle to turn the engine. You can also use the method of jacking the tractor up and turning the rear wheel with the transmission in gear, but I've found it handier to use the belt pulley. You can also do the same thing with the PTO, but that is harder since the PTO only turns about 1/3 speed of the engine whereas the belt pulley is more like 2/3 engine speed.

Just get #1 back on the timing mark, and set the distributor in so that the points just break at that position, and lock it down. The issue may be fuel supply to the carb, they take massive amounts. The screen in the line at the carb might be plugged as well, check flow. JimN

I have cleaned the fuel system on the gas side to prestine condition, the carb really needed it. Tried to quickly use the thumb in the #1 hole and set it that way but didn't work. I tried to use a crank but the shaft wouldn't budge, any idea's why? I assume it should push in but is there a lock position or something?

The crank drive shaft is likely to be rusted in place. See neblinks photo on page 1.
The process is time consuming to get the shaft free with penetrant, and heat, and tapping, and twisting. To move the engine (in Gas mode with plugs out) lift one rear wheel and put it in high gear, rotating the wheel will rotate the engine easily. JimN

Supposed to be 60+ degrees here in MO starting tomorrow so will probably attack the problem at full speed. After reading your suggestions in think, WOW, why didn't I think of that, however would not have come up with the rear wheel thing on my own. Thanks. The sediment bowl I got was supposed to be OEM however the valve handle is too long and hits the bottom edge of the tank and won't go 360 degrees. Put the old valve in for now until I can rework the new one.
