I would like to know what the maximum voltage output should be for a early cub 6 volt generator which has just the cut-out and no regulator except for the high-low position switch to control the resistor in the field circuit. Someone told me it should be 17+ volts that does not seem right to me. also what should the maximum Amps output be? Thanks for any advice on this..... .....Gale

I agree with ny friend Bob. It truly DEPENDS ON THINGS LIKE: (First, the open unloaded output voltage dont mean all that much, its what it maintains into/across a battery that counts)

The condition of the battery (age, state of charge, design),,,,, ,,,,, the condition and quality of the LHBD switch especially its wiring and its GROUND,,,,, ,,the adjustment of the third brush if a 3 brush genny,,,,, ,,the general condition of the genny.

The setting resting voltage of a good n charged battery should be near 6.3 volts but when coupled to a good charging system at RPM raise to the 6.5 to 7 or so range again depending on the Low/High switch position n the other things above.

Gale - The answer is "it depends":

- Open circuited (nothing connected to the ARM terminal), and with the FLD grounded, you can will see anywhere from about 15 - 25 volts between the ARM terminal and ground.

- However with the wiring connected normally, the FLD terminal grounded (ie. with the LHDB switch set at "H"), and with a fully charged battery, 7.5 - 8.0 volts will be the max.

----

Maximum current output is 12 - 14 amps depending on the setting of the 3rd brush and upon generator temperature (warmer generator = fewer amps)

Note - All the above assume the engine's running at maximum governed RPM...

If the field circut is completely grounded it will probally put out 17 volts, but it was not intendent to operate that high

That would be a good way to burn it up. It was made to put around 7.5 without burning up. The cut-out and that gen will work just fine for a CUB as it just dont take that much to turn over a 60 cu in engine.
