Broke off the key on the 300U

My ignition key on my 300 utility broke off yesterday. There was enough metal hanging out to pull the broken part out. Of course that's the only key I have for the darn tractor! The key looks like a duplicated key.

What's the best way to go? Try to get a lock smith to cut a key from the broken one? Take out the ignition switch and replace it? Can a lock smith look at the ignition swithc and cut me a new key?

The closest implement dealer is about 35 miles away so always hate to drive there unless it's really needed.

Thanks for any ideas!

CNH part number for the key is 131313C1. It is light enough to be shipped through the mail for less than a buck. If your nearest dealer wont ship it hat way I'm sure you can find one that will.

All our IHC's from the 656 thru the 1066 used the same key from the factory. Our 400 had a completely different key from new.

Believe it is a Briggs & Stratton key. We used a screwdriver as an on-off key for many years. Yes, anything from cub cadet through 560 & later will work.

The price of a locksmith may be more than a new switch. Around here they charge for a service charge even if you bring it in. Then they want to put new pieces in the cylinder. Check to see if your switch may need replacing instead of rekeying the old one.

Better yet, take the broken part and the stub to a store that uses the old style clamp type keymakers. (not Walmart)They may be able to clamp it in and cut you a new key for a buck or two.

If it has coarse teeth any key from a cub cadet, 460/560 and newer and 303thru503 and newer combines should fit. Also 300. 400, and 450 should fit. Armand

Same key was used for many, many years on many, many tractors.

We've lost the keys to our 1256, easy solution - get the key from the 544. I'm willing to bet that key is not unique if it is the factory one...

And I'll bet a whole new switch complete with two keys isn't over $20, either.

Larry,

You could get ahold of Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch. He can send you a new one.
