I have an IH 784 diesel. Just was curious if adding a fuel additive would do me any good for preventative maintanence?

There is a diesel additive called Freedom MG20D
about to hit the market and it is the real deal. We have used it in IH,Cat,Mercedes and Ford diesels. It ups the MPG 25% and reduces emmissions also. It has a biocide and a cold flow improver in it too. I think it is a heck of a buy for teh money.

NOONE has even mentioned the fact that additives, such as Powerservive, etc., keep algae from forming in diesel fuel, if you let it sit long enough. I personally see no improvement in my truck using any of it.

Since water is no 1 enemy of a diesel fuel system, and now with low sulpur diesl,, i highly recommend something in diesl,, u will get a lot longer life of the injection pump and nozzels, there are a lot of products out there, but as a former truck owmner, i would'nt drive with out it. I used Howes anti -gel, but if it gets colder than -20 below zero,, then i would add some no 1 diesl or if u can get artic fuel,, thats the best for winter, It's cracked differant at the refinery! Hi Lazy77, yes you do require a Diesel fuel additive be it ATF or just a few tablespoons of engine oil. Reason the 784 has a Bosch injection pump and the front lip seal on the drive shaft is only lubed by the Diesel fuel. If this lip seal does not get proper lubrication it will wear an leak Diesel fuel into the crankcase. The seal is only about an $8.00 part but you have to remove the injection pump to replace it.

I see the truckers buying a "Lucas" brand additive all the time at the truck stop by the gallon. I doubt they would be spending the money if it didn"t help. I run it as well in my Dodge. Cheap insurance if you ask me! Good Luck in what ever you decide.

I have been told that the reduction of sulfur lowers the lubricity of the diesel fuel. If you believe you need to use an additive I would suggest one that increases lubricity. Truck drivers have added automatic transmission fluid to their fuel tanks for years, as a matter of fact I have a neighbor that when he changes fuel filters on his semis he fills the filters with AT Fluid. He use to be a full time diesel mechanic and told me this really helps clean injectors and such. I use to buy an additive from schaeffers for my diesel fuel tanks and it was soy based and was suppost to help with cleaning the fuel system and improve my fuel efficiency. I have been using soydiesel for 3 years now and I believe you get more lubricity and cleaning from soydiesel, but be careful not to get biodiesel made from other sources because they may give you some headaches especially in the winter.

You need a lube to add to the fuel for the injection pump. I think it was in 2003 they cut down on the sufer in diesel fuel and now they have ultra low sulfer deisel and its hard on the injection pump. This last year I seen alot of engines need new injection pumps. Alot of people are adding 2 stroke oil, some add motor oil. You can buy a injection pump lube which Im sure in the best.

I'd have to agree with Hugh, I don't think any of those fuel additives will really do anything for a diesel engine, except perhaps an anti-gel additive for winter time in a cold climate area.
Best thing to do for maintenance is to change all your fluids and filters at the recommended intervals in your owner's manual.

Gleanerguy: Plus the antigel in all these products is nothing more than methyl hydrate, and since methyl hydrate evaporates from a fuel tank, one may as well use pure methyl hydrate at half the cost. About 1/8 cup every fill up or every two weeks which ever comes first.

it can be beneficial but i recommend this first:

drain the tank, remove all the taps at the bottom, so that the tank has no fittings in it. you"ll probably find some junk stuck in those fittings. put everything back together and refill; replace the fuel filters and bleed. then add a supplement, and be prepared to change filters again.
