I cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, everthing today and will do more before reassembky. I still can't find source of the noise/rattle when I turn the block over(and over). I was sucessful in cleanig up the scratch in the cylinder bore with crocus cloth. It looks like I'll have to replace one or both pistons due to rust and pits.

Shortly after I bought my Super C the hydraulics just stopped, would'nt make a noise, nothing. After having the pump apart and several hours of drinking beer and starring at the tractor, I took the touch control box off and while trying to develop a plan I noticed a rattle when rolling it over. Under a plate on the top or bottom, don't remember, there was a small pipe plug fell out. The hole was only tapped about two threads deep and they finally let go after about forty years. It should have been warranty. I don't know if yours worked before you tore it apart or not. If not I'd pay special attention to those little pipe plugs. Jim

Greg,

Thanks for posting these pictures. I have to tear into my unit...1949 and to my knowledge it has never been opened...to try and figure out why it is leaking. These give me a good idea of what to expect. Based upon Hugh's comments, it appears you may have posted other pictures that I must have missed. If so, or if you have any others you didn't post, would you mind emailing them to me? Also, and tips you can offer to help me avoid trouble will be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Doug, I went back a few pages and rounded these up.
I'd also, as recommended, get the "serviceman's handbook, GSS-1024, Farmall Touch Control" from binderbooks.com.

Join the fun!

Thanks.

I had been out of town for the past two weeks, and had not read all the back messages when I posted my request. I have now worked my way through them and think I found most of what you sent me.

Sorry for wasting your time.

That said, the guys on this forum are great. I am continually amazed at the time spent helping others. Sure wish the world in general could mange itself this same way.

Have a great weekend.

Doug: 3-5 pages in are the photos of the progress of Pete and Sam. Sam is dealing with Super C, but those units are all the same. I've watched these touch control exploits since coming to YT around 2000. It seems as though tractors that have been parked for a number of years, give a lot more problems coming apart, then rust inside than tractors that heve been regularly in use. Just my observation. I've watched this one quite close, knowing full well it may come to pass before my passing.

You've got to wonder how many generations these little tractors will last. I'm sure most of the folks that bought them new are now deceased. Now the sons are starting wonder if they'll outlast the tractor, and many of them are in the hands of grandsons with a few ?????. Heck we even got a great grandson getting interested. I wonder how many new tractors being built today will get to the hands of great grandsons.

Greg: I'm not saying much, however I have been watching you, Pete and Sam with your hydraulic adventures. As you know,I'm into cleaning up and painting my Super A. I'm trying to decide whether my hydraulics need the same. They work well and at 55 years have never been apart, except to remove lines for an engine job. In fact having had 6 of these tractors since 1958, I've never had a hydraulic unit apart. KNOCK on wood.

Now the question is, do I paint then have leak a year or two from now, or do I tear into it just like you guys have. I got a week or two to scratch my head on that one.

Your package is in the mail, let me know when it arrives, and if you have any questions, let me have them. I just hope you got it all, I had so much paper floating around here last couple of days, was hard to keep track of it all, or at least to make sure everyone got at least one of each page.

Randy: I learned many years ago, take the fill plug out before the drain plug. There is no need for the oil bath.

Having met up with 130 when I was a mere 16 years old, then having owned 6 of these since, I was thinking I might just get through lift without doing a hydraulic kit. Looks like it's not one of the more exciting events of life. I guess however you are telling me to bite the bullet and do a kit, not leave it for the young folk.

That's pretty funny, now. I went out one cold saturday morning years ago to change the ring gear on my Super C. It's my plow tractor and was getting impossible to start. So I fire up my wood stove and kneel down or bend over and pull the drain plug and get hit square in the chest with what seemed like five gallons of ten degree oil. I just stood up, removed my coat and shirt and put them in the stove. I've drained that oil several times before and knew it was under pressure, just not this time, Jim

Hugh,

You know if you dont do it now soon as you get it painted it will leak. You have the gas tank off and the battery box off so now is a good time to do it where you dont have to remove all that again. When you remove the bottom plug to drain it, stand to the side. Dont ask me how I know this lol.

Greg, Love the pictures and the way you have it all layed out. Sure does help when you start putting things back together and you know for sure where things go. When I did my restoration I put the bolts and things in seed envelops and paper bags and wrote on there where they went. You think you will will remember where things like that go but after a few days you forget. I had one table top filled with bags and stuff but it all went back like it should.

Wish I had that vise, thats one thing I really need.

SuperA-Tx, LOL! I too got baptized! Wasn't expecting it to be under pressure!

I wasn't going to admit it on the forum. Just glad to know I'm not alone.
