I just pulled the ammeter out of my 49 H. Stripped a lot of paint off and found the bezel is brass. Polished it up with a Dremel and Brasso, and it looks like GOLD. It has the IH logo and the number 423 (8 or6)3-DA underneath Now when you lay the gauge on it's side the needle will slowly rise to about 6 amps. Lay it on it's other side and same thing, -6 amps. Is this normal? All the repro gauges are nickel/chrome. When did IH switch from brass to chrome bezels?Or were the old gauges chrome plated over the brass? This will drive the correct police crazy Gordo

Lots of things used to be made of brass. Then the money issue came along.... As far as the needle position ammeters are somewhat delicate in their manufacture and useage. The needle is heavy enough to turn against the spring tension.

Guages were a vendor item for IH, I would bet during the production run of the letter series several mfgs were used.If I remember correctly there were 3 face changes on the amp guage.

Wondering if they didn't make the rims from brass for rust/corrosion protection??
