None of my three manuals covers the removal of the shift lever. I want to pop it out of there and check for wear. Does it simply come straight up and out, and back in easily. Or is there a way to mash the thing so I can't get it back in? Neblinc, can you send me those photos of the lever and the specs on original versus worn levers? As you guys can deduce, that starter is on, CLEAN, and I'm doing the pedestal and shift. Only two feet to go. Brakes are already done, as is all the drawbar, supports, PTO cover. New axle bearins left side.New rear tires, Rims done inside and out. New steering wheel.New seat. New chrome stack. Set of lights all restored and ready.Complete new wiring harnesses. Anyone wanna guess how much this has cost? Gotta get that tin painted so I can install gas tank and hear it run.

One point I never see discussed but have wondered about is the wear pattern. People somtimes ask about the depth dimension (vertical). But isn't the wear pattern in the front to back (horozontal) dimension? I would guess that the front and back corners would become rounded resulting in the problem of not getting all the way in or out of gear. Thoughts?

Yeah, no kiddin'!

Just crossed the $5K threshold on this one and find out I have 3 hydraulic fittings still dripping. :>(

Think chasin' the ladies and drinkin' Lord Calvert might have been cheaper after all!

You put those ugly front wheels and tires in the shade to hide them, right? :)

I told myself to try and not keep track of the cost of restoring these H's. It all adds up quick, but if I sit down and figure out what I have spent, it might take the fun out of working on them
I am under no timeline to get them done, so I try and spread out my parts purchases as I earn "spending" money working for my neighbor part time.

I bought 4 rear tires first of the year and still need to buy a couple of rear rims, cha ching :!:

Gordo, all I have is a pic from Nebraska Cowman showing what it should look like. I was tempted to order a new one from CaseIH, since this gets brought up all the time just to get the exact measurements, but at $200+ for that, I will have to pass. I have some other pics of the shifter rails on my website in modern view.

Jed is correct. If you ruin one of the two caps they can be found at NAPA. Core plugs, might be 5/8" take your old ones. Remove one cap, and punch the pin through, pushing out the other. The pin might be difficult to punch out if it is worn, push down on the lever to relieve wear locking from the pin while tapping.

Simply remove the caps and punch the pin out. Then lift the shifter up.
