Super H Transmission sticking

I use the tractor for plowing snow right now. Sometime when stopping it will stick in reverse or 1st (depending which direction I'm going). . Depressing the clutch does not let it disengage. I usually can "strong arm" it out of gear but yesterday had to really work it to get it to come out of gear. Any suggestions. Thanks.

PS Just got the tractor last summer, came with the house. Worked fine until about mid December. When it's working good it's very smooth.

Clearing mud (hopefully)
If you are in first, going along on the driveway with nothing holding you back (not plowing snow)and push in the clutch to its limit (fully pressed down) does the tractor stop moving forward by coasting to a stop as expected, or does it tend to keep going and going?
If it stops well, and you can find neutral, does it grind horribly if you put it into any gear?
I suspect that it stops as you think it should, and does not try to keep going.
I also suspect it does not grind horribly, but as one would expect as the trans slowed down. If you waited more it might not grind at all.
If so the issue is with the shifter rail for 1st and rev gears including the detent balls, shift fork, and springs. To get there it is necessary to pull the top cover and see what is worn.

A weld up and retouch of the tip of the shifter, and replacing the shifter retaining pin (must come out to pull shifter from the cover any way) might fix it without removing the top cover, but not my best guess.

The search for box has archive data and pictures of H shifter tip rebuilding. That takes just an hour of so to try. If no go the trans rail is suspect. JimN

The solution was right on. I was able to go at it this morning and found the shifter wore almost to a point. I welded , grinded (ground?), and re-assembled. WORKS A-1. Thanks for the help.

The response from Janicholson sounds pretty close. I'll check this and let you know.

Wow a lot of responses quick. When I say disengage the clutch I mean push the clutch pedal. It still "holds on" so you can't move the gear shift lever. I'm using a push plow and don't use the pto as I don't have any attachments yet.

No offense to any of these guys, but your issue is purely clutch related. If it were ice in the transmission, the tractor would still stop when you pushed the pedal. Your clutch is binding for some reason.

I had the same problem with mine. Ended up replacing the clutch, pilot bearing, and pressure plate.

You make a good point, but i think by disengaging he means shifting it out of gear, which could be ice in the gearbox or problems with the fork. If it were the clutch, the problem wouldn't be limited to R and 1.

We have an H with a belly mower that will do that sometimes if you're on a little bit of a hill. The pto will bind up just a little and have the transmission in a bind as well. When you push in the clutch are you still blowing snow? Does the transmission still have issues when the pto is disengaged? If it only happens with the pto engaged I would say that it is the cause. With our setup I find that shifting out of gear while the tractor is still just barely rolling will make things work a little easier. Another thought woul be the thickness of the oil in the differential and cold temps. Doubtfull though.

Does it grind when you shift it in gear. Could be the clutch not disengaging properly thus keeping power on the gears.

It does grind sometimes but I think it's just me being impatient

I would suspect Ice in the rear end oil. Take out the drain plug at the back and see if water comes out, when it warms up a bit or if the oil looks creamy. There are 2 drain plugs so if you change the oil one in front of the trans housing and the one at the very back, be sure both plugs come out.
