With the price of diesel going out of sight, can I burn SVO in a 650 that starts on gas? Can I use it in a 560 diesel?

Thanks for all the replies to using SVO.
Out here in Oregon the log truck dvivers (1950's) were known to pour the used motor oil back into the diesel tanks when changing oil. I think early diesels had mechanical injectors.

Would clean used MO be an alternative to SVO?

gene, clearly you aren't educated on the subject.

SVO, or straight vegetable oil, is different from biodiesel. SVO has no "refinement" done to it, and no special equipment to handle it. All you need is a small hand pump to suck it out of the waste oil barrels at the restaurants, and 5 gallon containers to transport it in.

The vehicle is modified to include a heated (using engine coolant) tank to keep the oil at the right viscosity, and a way to switch from straight diesel to SVO. You can't leave the SVO in the lines or the injector pump, because it will gel up and make a mess!
Sooo, even though a 650 is gas-start, you will still need to have a way to switch to regular diesel at shutdown time before you switch to gas.

Biodiesel is treated chemically with lye and methanol to remove the glycerin, and can be dumped straight into the regular diesel tank.

Either fuel is BETTER for any diesel engine than dino diesel. Both have more lubricity, (they're "more slippery") which reduces wear and tear, makes the engine run smoother, etc..

Our tractor club had a presentation on bio-fuel last year. Bacteria grows in diesel fuel but it really grows in bio-fuel. They said that the shelf life is about 6 months. Anything longer than that you will probably have problems with the fuel filters. The bacteria is a black slimy mess that will plug the fiters. Then the fun begins. You also need to look at the BTU content.

I would agree with what Randy said.

I have been burning a 10% blend of bio for 5 years now in 4 tractors and my combine.

It has worked great and replaced my first filter in 5 years last fall on the combine.

So what he says about the shelf life may be correct. The rest run often enough that there is no problem. I get 900 gallon loads at a time and they are gone in about 3 months max.

Sometimes I use that 900 gallon in 2 or 3 weeks.

But I wouldn't take used veggie oil and run it in my tractors.

Sounds like a good way to screw up a good engine. By the time you get all the stuff needed to use that oil then cost of getting the used stufff a place to refine it store and so forth just buy the correct furl and save a lot of time and money.

You need to do a search for running this stuff. I quit using SVO when 50 gallons if oil cost MORE than 50 gallons of diesel. Now, WVO is something totally different.

A local University had a KingAir that they converted to run on used fryer oil as part of some alternative fuel experiments. Whenever that thing was running out on the ramp it smelled like french fries!

in the least you need a fuel heater to keep it liquified. the gas start probably would be the easiest to convert, most vehicle conversions also require regular diesel to start, your gas start skips that need.

you will have to have a filter system to get the veg oil clean enough before you even think about putting it in the tractor
