I"ve just invested in a 1972 1066, It has straight pipe without a muffler. I"ve heard that gassers like a little back pressure that a muffler gives; is this also true with turbo diesels? Got plenty of HP for what I need, just would like to know what is better for the motor. Also at full throttle tach only goes up to a little under pto speed, could this be the tach gears slipping or cable? It's showing 8900 hours on it.

Thanks John K

As Allan indicates the tach night not be bad if it is not looking squirrelly. rent or borrow a strobe tach to check actual engine RPM. (they do not connect to anything, just have a dial to make the front pulley appear to stop) with a readout of rpm. JimN

We straight-piped our 1086 several years ago... EGT runs lower, better fuel economy on light loads and it sounds sweet at 5 on a clear morning you can hear it bellar from several miles away!

No benefit for the engine to have a muffler, many turbo applications do not. I eliminated the muffler on my 1086, inside the cab you can not tell the difference. Outside it makes a lot more whistle and sounds more throaty in the mid-rpm range, but as far as noise there is virtually no difference.

There are many, many turbo diesels of every color out there running with straight pipes. If you have a cab then that will quiet it down a little. If you are going to do a lot of farming with it you should probably either put a muffler on it or wear hearing protection. I know. Most farmers don't worry about things like that. They do sound sweet with the straight pipe. I would agree with Allen on the tach. If you haven't been around a lot of turbo diesels it is hard to tell from the sound if you are getting all of your rpms.

Good fer you, John!

Don't think the straight pipe actually "hurts" anything, but it sure makes 'em sound gawd-awful. A new muffler and extension is almost as good as a new paint job. :>)

That tach works just like the old cable-driven speed-o-meters used to. If it is not jumping or bouncing around, think the clock spring bushings are gummed up with dirt/oil and you probably need a new head.

Is the engine actually coming up to speed as it should?

Allan
