Is there a whey that I can change the gearing for the reverse on a IH 464. It goes way to fast in reverse, I would like to slow it down if possible. It has 4 gears fwd and rev and hi/low only in fwd not rev.

Thanks for the replies, I'm using a 3 pt 7ft single auger snow blower and yes someone put on it the oversized 14.9x28 tires. I would like to cut the rev. speed in half to make the job be easier on shear bolts and have some fenesse. It does go (approximately) the same speed in rev as the 1-4 in fwd (low). It sounds as though it will cost me as much as it is worth to modify it. The tractor only has 1400 hrs and a heated sims cab and I thought that if I could fix this it would be perfect.
Thanks

w464, there were at least 3 different transmission speeds for those models of tractors.
By looking at the suffix letter on the chassis serial number plate by the transmission dip stick:
Suffix A = Slow speed gear box, B = fast speed gear box, C = slow speed gear box with slow first gear.
My brother has a 454,495 & 684 with fast gear box, 3032 with slow speed gear box. The 3032 is about 1 gear slower than the others. on 3032, 3rd low is equivalent to 2nd low on the others.

driven newer variations of same tractor rear end /trans

All 4 reverse gears should be the same or similar speeds to the 4 forward low range gears. I think 4-5 MPH was the top speed in reverse.

The hydraulic shuttle on the later variations (i.e. 685 etc ) gave you faster reverse gears and reverse in high range....

How fast in 1st gear reverse? Should be under 2 MPH? I can see that being a hurdle for snow blower work in heavy wet snow. Snowblowing is the only full PTO rpm slow speed reverse work I can think of off hand.
Smaller rear tires might help, especially if someone installed way oversized tires, 14.9-28 or 13.6-28 would be about normal.

Sort answer, no.

You can slow reverse down by idling the engine down. For tight maneuvering, learn to use the brakes and feather the clutch to inch your way back.
