Just wondering if any of you are using a pump of some kind to fill the tank instead of the bleeder method.

What I'm thinking about doing is setting up a vapor pump to create a pressure differential. I've got a Tecumseh A/C compressor off a ford van that I think will do the job. It's a cast iron reciprocating pump with two cylinders and since it's designed to handle A/C system pressure it should easily handle LP pressure. The important feature is that is has it's own seperate oil resevoir. It will just take a little finagaling to get the fittings worked out. Shouldn't take much running of it after the tanks have equalized to get the tank to top off.

A long time ago, in High School, I worked at the local Co-op and one of my jobs was filling Ammonia tanks. That setup used a vapor pump, although of course it was much much bigger. That's what got me to thinking about using a vapor pump. Filling those 1000 gallon tanks to 85% seemed to take forever though!

We had lots of safety equipment, such as an on/off switch on the pump. Also legs, to run away if something bad happened!

I have 5 lp tractors and 2 trucks on lp and I use a hand transfer pump to fill my trucks and tractors. It works great except it takes a while to fill the 40 gal. tank on my truck. When its cold out that's not much fun. I bought the pump at our local Co-op that sells lp for about $375.00. I had a hose made and I use it to bleed off the tank pressure from my tractor/truck tank back to my fill tank. Once you equalize the tank pressures on the vapor side, lp will transfer real easy, with very little loss of fuel. Even if you are bleeding off your tanks to fill them. A vapor bleed off hose will help you keep from losing allot of fuel from bleeding of the excess tank pressure when filling. Especially if your tank is hot and has allot of pressure in it. Of course the easiest way is to run the tank completely empty, but you will need a secondary tank to get you back to your fill tank, I have 2 tanks on a couple of my tractors that I use when I am far from my fill tank. This saves me allot of time when you are far from home. I have since them set up my truck to where I can transfer some lp from my truck to my tractors if I should run out in the field which is extremely handy as well. In the summer time you can hook up your fill hose and bleed the tank off to the point where it starts to fill with propane and shut the bleeder and leave it over night and your tank will fill up as the tank cools. Your fill tank needs to be at least 30-40% for this to work. It will fill all the way up. Let me know if I can help you with anything else Hal

This will only work to fill with the vapor bleed off line not hooked up or shut off, just the fill line hooked up. Sometimes they will fill to about 90% if this happens you can use the tractor right away and run a gallon or two out, the pressure won't build up that fast to cause any problems. Normally it doesn't take much to get it back to 80-85%. The worst thing that will happen will the pop off valve will release some of the pressure off the tank. The raw propane that is released is no more than when you bleed fill your tractor. I would not store the tractor in a barn until the tank is reduced to at least 85% then it will be safe to store inside. The only time that I had a problem was the tractor had set in the sun in the morning for an hour or so and the pop off was letting off some of the pressure before we started using the tractor.

Thinking about a simple vapor pump. Wrote above.

I still need to get some pics up here of that Super M! Do you have any of your collection?
