I need to replace the headgasket on my 340 utility and was wondering if there is anything specific I need to watch for. I am also considering having it gone over by a professional. What should I expect to pay if it is in need of a rebuild (just the head) and what must I watch for. I am getting some oil out of the exhaust and I believe the head is the culprit.

I have owned a 340 Farmall (gas) since 1958. The compression pressure is 180 psi new. We rebuilt the engine at 2900 hrs with compression down to 120, but it was consuming considerable oil if it was worked hard. As far as the head is concerned, they have a 7.6.1 compression ratio and we had problems with keeping the head gasket from seeping anti-freeze on the exterior. Planed the head the last time and it has held but the tractor has just done utility work the past 35 years.

just outa my head i will say 90-110 psi. as long as they are fairly even , about 10% variance for each cyl. look at plugs and see how they are burning, should be clean with grey tinge.not black and oil fouled or carboned up.this could be the case if your idling around yard and tractor does not get to operating temp.get it under load and work it, then check plugs.its a lot easier to give info. when in a hands on situation. this would be basic info. to get you started on the unit.we dont know your tractor, such as hours on eng.,how its operated, exc.like you mentioned , if you had it looked at by a mechanic he could give you the run down on it . as i have seen beginners get in difficulty and the final tab is more than if an experianced person did the job. but everyone has to start some place.have questions ask, well good luck.

the first thing to do would be to remove spark plugs and read them.this tells your engine condition pretty fast. then do a compression test.sounds like you have more going on than a head gskt.maybe piston?rings? for ex.

The tractor has good power and only mist a little oil on start up. The air cleaner container is not overfull and I just started noticing a little seepage under the head.Do you have any idea what the compression should be on a c-135?
