Farmall A Steering Disassembly

I have a 1940 A which I cannot keep oil or corn head grease in the steering box. The major leak is thru the horizontal joint where the box appears to bolt together. The minor seeping is where the steering whell shaft enters the box. Can anybody suggest any disassembly tips or other suggestions. thanks.

Unless you have had that steering box off and rebuilt it I would bet your steering is real sloppy. How far do you turn the steering wheel
before the wheels turn. It may be best to take the
thing off and completely rebuild it. Not real
expensive. Check the archives for how to do it or

Thanks for the reply Dave.
My steering actually has almost no play. It just steers stiff and leaks. My first thought was to fill w/90W which just ran out but apparently retained enough to dilute the cornhead grease I put in. I just use it for pulling at events so don't put many miles on it, its more of cosmetic nuisance.

Well my steering is completely rebuilt, but I use grease from the grease gun to completely fill the
steering gear case. My son used to pull our Super A
and he sure amazed a lot of people with it. I remember one time we had it weighted pretty good the flagman waited 1/3 of the way down the track where he thought it would stop, he had to walk 1/2 way, then 3/4, and almost to the end before a rear
wheel broke loose on a rock and started spinning.
surprised a lot of people including me and my son.

There is a gasket between the two assy. The seal on the steering shaft can be replaced by taking off the large nut on the end of the steering box and removing the steering wheel the shaft will screw out the end giving assess to the seal. I would replace the bushing at the same time it is just below the seal and the parts are avail at dealers if thats the only place you have a leak. TEFLON tape or a thread sealer should be used on the threads of the large nut when re-assembling.

You could cut the gasket to install then use plenty of sealer. If you support the front you could remove the cap screws that hold it together seperate the two halves enough to get the new gasket in. The other way is removing the drag link on the bottom and it will come off as you take the two halves apart. To do this you will need to remove the pin that leets the front axle move then the bottom will crop off either way its a messy job with the sector packed with grease. If i am going to work on them for a rebuild i take wheels off disconnect the drag links then remove the whole axel. Ive done several last few yrs for ones i was selling and repair work for others as the word has got around that i can rebuild them and then they are like new again. It is easier than when i did the first one but always messy with the grease.

I have mine apart right now. The gasket on mine was shot but it wasnt leaking much. To be leaking grease i would think that something is big time loose or no gasket at all.

Do a search on this job, there are other things you need to check before you put it back together

yep thats the worst part of these tractors about leaking you gona have to take the front axle out, the radiator, iwould check the bearings in that steering box while you got it a part . you might get lucky and just the bolts that hold the box together could be loose
