I don't know about the 9 series, but the 6 series has 2 different types of frames. A channel iron frame like the Farmalls and a cast iron version. What's the story on those?

The change from bathtub cast frame to the channel side rails was made during the production run of the Super W-6. I don't know the reason for the change but it was probably just to symplify the design.

Nice trivia. I have many hours operating both a WD-9 and WDR-9. Forgot about the foot operated throttle. Nice to be reminded. Thanks.

well i'll take a stab at it. the wr-9 and wr-9d were rice tractors. they had over center hand clutch, big ole squared off fenders, rice tires, and a foot operated throttle. when the super w-9 came out, it was not available in a gas motor.

Glen,

When the Super series came out, the regular W-9 was not offered with a gas motor, but the rice version was in the form of the WR-9-S which had all of the new Super features but still had the same engine as the previous series.

Eason,

Since you and Glen both answered the trivia right off, congradulations. I figured we would get a number of wrong guesses from other parts or the country where there were few Rice Field Special tractors.
1. Tires on WR/WDR were standard with larger I-1 single rib front and larger R-2 rice & cane rear. On steel wheel tractors front wheels were bigger and had 3 " guide rings on WR/WDR and rear wheels were bigger and had 6" lugs. Mud scrapers were also standard on steel equipped WR/WDR tractors.

2. Fenders were larger curved flat top coverage type and operator platform was larger to facilitate operating while standing.

3. A hand clutch was standard for easier operation while standing. (Hand clutch was optionsl on all other W models)

4. The foot decellerator was used to slow down while crossing rice levees.

Just for fun and information,
Harold H

Shame on you, you should get a nice McCormick 4-16 Little Genius plow to pull with your "9" and quit playin' around pullin' little M size plows. Make that old bird earn it's keep and work up a sweat!
